Quote:
Seventeen-year-old David is fading from his world, like a Polaroid picture in reverse. He longs to feel connected to something bigger.

When his brothers discover the new extension at the rental cottage comes with a locked door, David finds the key first. Expecting to claim a bedroom, he opens a dimensional gateway instead, exploring abandoned versions of his world in different timelines, 1960s muscle cars alternating with crumbling cottages.

Except now the dimensional bridge won’t close, and something hungry claws the door at night. David scours for clues to break the bridge, but each trip to the other side makes him fade more on his. Even if he succeeds, he risks severing his connection to his own world, and dying on the wrong side, forgotten.

I'm pretty sure both books are based on the same true story. Four men disappear from a lighthouse.

Lamplighters is more 'literary' and has gotten good reviews from the pros. But customer reviews are split and the bad reviews don't seem like people disappointed it wasn't just a potboiler.

So I want to try the book, but can wait for a sale.

I agree: It looks very interesting, but like you that price seems high just to try it out.

I do, however, sometimes pay that price for certain ebooks.

First, thank you for the heads up on these bargains. The paragraph below is for informational purposes only.

INFORMATION ONLY: These may or may not be a wonderful bargain. Check them out if you find a particular author or subject matter intriguing, but know that every free requested ebook requires your email to each specific author. One could literally be inundated with promotional follow-up emails over an indefinite period of time or until one cancels. This may or may not be a wonderful thing depending upon your temperament.

DISCLOSURE: This is my personal experience with bookfunnel.

Oh, the fact that this is a mainstream publisher and the story sounds so good is almost enough. If the user reviews were overwhelmingly positive, it would be worth $15.

Thanks for the Tim Meyers books. I've picked up a couple of his books already (The Switch House and 69), but haven't read them yet. Which of his books do you recommend?

That's my experience, too. Also, a lot of book-related sweepstakes do the same thing. You enter a contest in the desperate hope of winning something like a box of popular hardcovers. Then, you start getting promotional emails from the five or twelve or whatever writers who sponsored it.

Some writers send great newsletters and don't sling them out too often. But many of the authors in book giveaways (and contests) think they have to send their readers an email each day, no matter that. ("I stubbed my toe this morning. BTW buy my book.")

That said, I might peek at that bookfunnel page anyway... But if I see anything that looks really good, it might be less trouble to buy it.

That's funny! Yes, it's sometimes much less trouble to buy the ebook, as you mention.

This (sometimes) constant email 'spamming' sometimes occurs with overly ambitious writers right here on Mobileread, too.

Now, in my case....

69 was an interesting read and the highest I rated anything by Meyer. If you can get Kill Hill Carnage on sale, give it a go -- a bit silly but plenty of gore.

69 - 4/5
Lords of the deep - 3/5
kill hill carnage - 3/5
the switch house - 2/5

Carrie by Stephen King is $1.99 at Amazon US.

That King kid is really something. If he keeps writing, I think he may go places...

Quote:
Stephen King's legendary debut, the bestselling smash hit that put him on the map as one of America's favorite writers.

Unpopular at school and subjected to her mother's religious fanaticism at home, Carrie White does not have it easy. But while she may be picked on by her classmates, she has a gift she's kept secret since she was a little girl: she can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. Her ability has been both a power and a problem. And when she finds herself the recipient of a sudden act of kindness, Carrie feels like she's finally been given a chance to be normal. She hopes that the nightmare of her classmates' vicious taunts is over . . . but an unexpected and cruel prank turns her gift into a weapon of horror so destructive that the town may never recover.

Hey, those are the four books I have.

I didn't notice Kill Hill Carnage because it appears to no longer be available as an ebook on Amazon. But as soon as you mentioned the title, it rang a bell, so I checked Calibre.

I also have Lords of the Deep, though in Calibre it listed Patrick Lacey's name first.

From Valancourt Books:

Nightmares and Geezenstacks by Fredric Brown is currently $2.99 at Amazon US.

Quote:
One of the great pulp writers, Fredric Brown (1906-1972) combined a flair for the horrific, a quirky sense of humor, and a wild imagination, and published many classic novels in the mystery and science fiction genres. But he was also a master of the “short-short story,” tales only a page or two in length, but hard-hitting and with a wicked twist at the end.

Nightmares and Geezenstacks (1961) collects 47 short gems by Brown, ranging from science fiction to noir crime to horror, including the chilling and unforgettable “The Geezenstacks”. Long unobtainable, Brown’s classic collection returns to print for the first time in almost 40 years and is sure to please both longtime fans and those who are discovering this brilliant writer for the first time.
The original Bantam paperback cover:

Worth mentioning in this thread, too: This is a great collection of short-shorts. Highly recommended.

Black River Lantern by Alex Grass is FREE at Amazon US.

I've not read anything by Alex Grass, but the book sounds quirky, it is free and it came to me though the Early Bird newsletter, so the book is published by some subset of Open Road Media.

Quote:
Eddie Marivicos is trapped in a cycle of exploitation. And his daddy likes it that way. He was brought up by his father Papa Marivicos to work in the family carnival. Papa is a cruel man who runs his show like a labor camp. When it comes to the Marivicos Summerlong Carnivalé Festival, the show must go on… at any and all costs.

Eddie has recently been “gifted” with the ability to hear others’ thoughts; to him, it’s a supernatural horror story that he cannot escape—a curse. Dubbed “second sight”, this condition propels Eddie to local stardom, and for Papa, Eddie becomes the goose that laid the golden egg. But there are other opportunists who would make use of Eddie’s powers for their own personal gain.

As other people from Kayjigville come into Eddie’s orbit—the mafia, and a greedy businesswoman who resurrects her fortunes after being disgraced—their fates become intertwined with his. Dr. Chain, a clinical psychologist, is tasked with looking after the young man after an explosive accident caused by Eddie’s powers sends the town reeling. An escort named Lexi will cross paths with Eddie, and provide him comfort during a grim time in his life. Being close to the mind-reader does not come without consequence.

In this paranormal horror story, everyone that comes within Eddie’s orbit will be bloodied and scarred before it’s all through. Papa Marivicos wants power and will stop at nothing to get it—extortion, murder, and perhaps even conjuring a Lovecraftian horror from another dimension, a presence that sends him into a spiral of grotesque mutation. Eddie wants nothing more than to break away from the darkness carved in his DNA, but will have to reach to the ends of the known universe to do so. The Marivicos family drama escalates as father and son learn to unlock the latent powers of their ancestors. One by manipulating sound, fire, and darkness; the other by harnessing the power of light.

The 47th Annual Marivicos Summerlong Carnivalé Festival will kick off a chain of events that will usher in a dark and tragic horror upon the carnival, Kayjigville, and even realms thought to be the stuff of only the most far-flung paranormal fantasy... Feast your senses on this tale of dramatic supernatural fantasy tale!
