One question about the page count plugin:
Is it possible to do the counting based on:
- page size + margins + font/fontsize? ( you'd set these parameters manually before)

I print stuff at A5 with set margins and fontsize and it would be neat to have an accurate page count within Calibre
There is no way to do what you want other then converting to PDF and then seeing how many pages there are.

But that's not easy for the average user.

Boy did you just lower the bar on 'Average User'
It is a tick box on the Other tab.

The hard part is picking the site to use from the list. (for me, it just eliminated half as they are not primarily English language sites. )

The only English site I have is Goodreads. I used to also have Kobo.

I guess Amazon was too inconsistent to use that.

As I use the RMSDK page numbering, I don't need to download page numbers.

Okay, yes I recognized that you can "download" the page count from websites like goodread. I also looked into the .py files of the script a bit, but I'm not a real programmer: Is it possible in theory to point to a local address on my network where I would set up a system that automates counting the pages the way I want?
Example:
Automate the conversion of epub into PDF with my settings( A5 size, font, fontsize) - then count the pages - put that count into a database that the page count plugin can look at by going to my local address?

Try this:
  1. Set Preferred Output in Preferences->Behaviour to PDF.
  2. Set Page size, margins etc in Preferences->Conversion->Output options->PDF Output
  3. Create an integer custom column for page counts, e.g. #pages/Pages
  4. Set this plugins Page count column accordingly
  5. Set this plugins Page count Algorithm to E-book Viewer (calibre)
  6. Convert whatever ebook-format you have (e.g. EPUB) to PDF
  7. Run this plugin

This worked, it's 99% accurate which is good enough for me. THANK YOU!
Addition for it to work:
8. Go into the plugin options with customize plugin > Other > Other options > SET "use preferred output format if available"
9.

Good - the process was off the top of my head, I didn't test it as I normally would, so I'm not surprised I missed step or two.

When using chars per page, do paragraph breaks add anything?

calibre, version 7.26.0
count pages version 1.13.6

Probably just missed something in the FAQ. Maybe someone can help.

About 6k books imported to Calibre. Sanity checking the books for corruptions/errors with count pages plugin.

Estimate page counts using Algorithm: "E-book viewer (calibre)".

About 200 books failed to page count with errors (mostly "No convertible format found").

Spot checking some of these books, they all open and paginate fine with the calibre e-book viewer.

One book for example, calibre library says it is format "azw" (not azw3 for whatever reason). It opens fine in the Calibre e-book viewer (viewer title bar says KF8).

I suspect it is because Calibre library is reporting these as format:azw instead of format:azw3 for some reason? Not sure why they imported that way when Calibre e-book viewer reports them as KF8 (same as azw3 right?).

format:KFX also doesn't count pages even though I have the KFX input plugin and they open fine in the calibre e-book viewer.

So it looks like the pattern is the format reported by Calibre library (rather than whether or not the calibre e-book reader can open and paginate the books).

These count pages: azw3, mobi
These don't: azw, azw4, kfx, HTMLZ

All of them open fine in calibre e-book viewer.

I hoping there is something obvious I missed. Thanks!

What about the other azw books, they won't open? That may be de-drm fail, if I recall correctly. Now I have converted pretty much my entire library to EPUB.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. There are 13 that calibre library says are azw (rather than say azw3). None of them count pages. All of them open find in calibre e-book viewer.

The "count pages not working" is format specific rather than book specific...

So the issue is not book specific but rather format-specific.

Yes, deDRM is in the mix, but as this is not book-specific but format specific (all or nothing by format) and individual tests show that these problem format books open fine in calibre ebook viewer... I didn't want to bring that up as a potential distraction.

Perhaps if I converted them to epub first then the plugin would work (as the format is different)...but since it is using the calibre ebook viewer page-count "algorithm"...I was hoping if I could open it in calibre viewer fine that the count pages plugin would also work.
