If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's got a lot of nifty spiritual passages, but just reading the book from start to finish doesn't lead to warm feelings about the deity described.
Just wanted to add: endorsed slavery, racism, sexism and incest a-la Fritzl. Or do we just "skip" those parts?

LOL - exactly what I was thinking. We watch all those scary fundamentalists on the TV but don't realise that they're creeping around in our backyard to. If I do need to know anything about god then I just go this site.

P.S. That's what all the nastiness in the book is meant to show. Even the individuals God picked, can't be good enough.

No. The "nastiness" was the following of the direct orders of God. The Israelite in the Bible didn't commit genocide and all their other crimes in spite of God-- they did it because they were told by God to do it.

So, yes, it shows nastiness. Just not what you want to believe that it shows.

Is one supposed to get the impression that it describes a god of love? 'Cos that's not what I got from it.

Great! I've got nothing against books. But its important to divide ideas that are linked to Truth from ideas which are merely ideas. Also I've just got to point out that theres quite a lot of evidence (and this is just an idea) that the story of Buddhas life became mixed with the life of Jesus at a certain point. This is a pretty vast topic but the idea has to do with the fact that the story of Buddha was not written down until after the crucifixion (supposedly).

Things changed when Jesus showed up.

God loves, but God is Just. What do you think the last judgement is all about?!

The wiki definition is Fundamentalism refers to a belief in a strict adherence to specific set of theological doctrines which seems to sum you up quite well. I guess many people believe themselves to be one thing while the mirror states something else.

It's a shame this Jesus character didn't clearly and explicitly tell his followers that they are no longer expected to kill "witches".

It's still going on:

http://articles.cnn.com/2010-08-25/w...ge?_s=PM:WORLD

It's a shame so many religious people don't admit their beliefs are just beliefs, and try to claim they are facts.
