You need to extract boot.img from your update.zip file, then follow the instructions to create a new boot.img file and use fastboot to send the new file to your device. |

Google Play Store reported that Google Docs was not compatible with my device. Guess I need an older version.

Sorry, yes, I'd forgotten that. You will need probably to sideload the APK, as the device fails compatibility checks with some applications when using the Play Store. IIRC this also applies to WPS Office, which won't install from the Play Store, but does install and run if sideloaded. My experience was with an Boox N96, but the Max / Max Carta should work similarly. The APKs are easily available online.

Good to know. Perhaps an older version of Word can run on it as well?

I'm not sure there was a version of Word for Android 4.0. Microsoft released a different app for older versions of Android, which does work with Android 4.0. I haven't tried it, and I no longer have an N96, so I don't know if it can be gotten to run on Onyx devices. Perhaps someone else has given it a try?

I remember that one, kind of limited but I only need text input. Will probably look strange on that large screen, but I'll take a look tomorrow. Excellent find.

I wonder how the development team reasoned when they decided to release a full Android device with a crippled OS? As it stand right now it is a single purpose glorified freakishly expensive PDF reader with half decent annotation tools. Selecting text in NeoReader 2.0 and add a highlight or annotation is a hit and miss proposition due to screen flicker. A few times just as I've finished making my text selection and as the toolbar appears the screen feels the need to refresh and shakes of both tool bar and text selection and the process has to start over from the beginning. It probably helps if you have the patience of Steve Scully when using this device. |

There used to be instructions about getting around the playstore restrictions for the boox t68, involving root and an app that would report the device as being a regular phone (I think galaxy s3 at the time). If you can find those instructions on the forum, I could imagine that they work on the Max as well. Of course this only gets around the restrictions if the app is still in principle compatible with android 4.0

I fear that only apps that haven't been updated the last two years fall in that category. Obviously better than none, but hopefully more should be available when it is upgraded to 4.4.

When I had the N96, I had much better luck downloading apks to my desktop using Racoon (http://raccoon.onyxbits.de/) or from apkmirror.com (especially where I needed an older version, for example for Dropbox), copying them onto the reader, and then installing them. If you don't mind rooting, some variant of the approach suggested by Booxtor in 2014 might still work, although I haven't tried it myself: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=242320 Good luck - I hope you get things to work. I decided the time had come to baptize my Onyx Boox Max Carta. Hence, I decided to take along the OBMC to my local Misudo (Japanese doughnut shop) and nothing else. Well, well, well... when I took it out of its sleeve it showed a charge cable and a battery icon with a flash symbol through it. Something must be wrong, I thought. I charged if fully less than three days ago and after that I used it at most for an hour, and I know I turned off both WiFi and BT specifically to save battery.
So, returning back home, it was with some trepidation I inserted the micro USB charge cable, but the screen immediately turned on and it booted up. I went into Android System --> Battery and it reported battery usage 2d 5h 44m 38s on battery. Divided by: Device idle 46% Android OS 43% Screen 5% Wi-Fi 5% Browser 2% Why the hell is the OS so active when turned off, and why is there something called Device idle that eats up juice? And more importantly, will 4.4 rectify this? Last edited by Kumabjorn; 06-17-2017 at 04:52 PM. |

Android does consume a lot of battery. It is just not so optimized as system. That's another reason why many of us would like to have a Linux distro instead of it.

Also, I discovered the battery is a pittance, rated at 4100 mAh. That is along the line of a smartphone. I understand that lightness is a good sales argument but distributing the battery along all four edges would keep it both well balanced and light feeling enough yet provide something like 15 000 mAh.
