Have you been able to play with any of the demos yet? I am looking forward to receiving my 6" today. This will determine whether I get the hubby a 8 or 16 gb, though I am leaning towards the 8 gb since he barely puts anything on his.

I will later this weekend. Yesterday I spent the bulk of the day fine tuning my settings and messing around with my book and audible collections. I will say this, I will not have much that is positive about the Collections in the Audiobook section. Though I am going to give them a little leeway because I missed the 2013 Fire and I am used to the Cloud Collections on the PW2. And as much as I dislike them there, they are much easier to work with then they are on the Fire.

I am trying to hold off giving my first impressions because I know a lot of the little things that are nagging me are because the Fire was spending time updating my large selection of Collections, so it is probably not as bad as I was thinking. But so far I just have little niggling things, nothing major that I do not like about it and several things that I do like about it over the 2012 Fire, which I had.

I sure did type of a lot for someone who is saving her opinions for later.

How is the sound - tinny? loud? clear? muffled? does it need an auxiliary speaker?

I haven't gotten to sound. Actually I have not gotten to anything, I am still playing with settings and such, mostly Audible Collections. And yes I am a Collections junkie even though they are tedious to work with, and I do mean tedious if you have a lot of audibles. This is the area that I am going to have negative things to say about.

I spent so much time on it I have not gotten around to the Apps yet. And I cannot figure out how to turn on the Household Profiles but here I didn't spend a lot of time messing with them.

Oh and for those that have the 2013 version, are there Collections in the Apps and Audiobook sections?

I plan to drag it around places to stream music, listen to audiobooks and OTR shows, check the weather, catch up on the news, play games, and maybe watch a video or two. So the most important feature for me is the sound. If the sound is no better than my Nexus 7, then there's no point in getting it. Tethering it to an auxiliary speaker defeats the purpose of having a small all-in-one device.

I recently received a Fire HDX 8.9 (2013). What do you mean by "collections"?

Cannot compare to the Nexus or Galaxy 7 Plus for what you want to do with it!!!
It will need external speakers or headphones.

I purchased it to maybe replace my PW and be able to play a game once in a while or watch a movie occasionally (with headphones). Figured it was worth the return shipping to try for the 30 days to decide whether to keep or return.

Definitely not a replacement for my Galaxy 7 Plus.

That's too bad. When I want to watch videos and stream audio, I use my Fire HD 7.1 because of the great speakers. Otherwise, my Nexus 7.2 is my go to tablet.

My getting an HD 6 hinges on the sound. If it's not loud and clear enough to listen to music while cleaning the kitchen, then there's no point in getting it.

I noticed in both the App sections you can build collections just as you do in the the books section. The Apps collections do not show up on my PW2, I am assuming because that device doesn't do apps. The Audible ones do and the existing book ones can be shared between the Books and the Audiobooks. While I like this in theory, I can see this is going to cause me problems since they are named similarly, I know I will end up deleting entries because they look like duplicates. But I will say that the speed that the device refreshes is much faster than my Note3, but it is quite annoying that when I turn the device on, I have to wait several minutes for it to go through all my collections and refresh them. I can see I am going to have to get into the same habit as my PW2 and let it sit for 10 minutes or so to let it do its thing so it doesn't slow me down.

Books and audibles are my main use for mine, with some apps and games thrown in the mix. But I will give the sound a go this weekend.

Oh and I love the small size, and it is very very light. But the smaller size makes hitting some of those dropdown arrows a little difficult.

Have you tried reading any Scribd books on it? Have you side loaded any reading apps on it?

No I do not do Scribd, yes I sideloaded a couple, which was as easy as it was on the 2012 Fire. Although 95% of my books are purchased through Amazon or through Overdrive, I sidedload all books through Calibre. I added @200 yesterday, but I haven't actually started reading on it yet. Oh and I just use the normal Fire reading app, all mine are azw3, even if they start out as epubs.
