"Mr. Verloc, the secret agent, keeps a shop in London's Soho where he lives with his wife Winnie, her infirm mother, and her idiot brother, Stevie. When Verloc is reluctantly involved in an anarchist plot to blow up the Greenwich Observatory things go disastrously wrong, and what appears to be 'A Simple Tale' proves to involve politicians, policemen, foreign diplomats and London's fashionable society in the darkest and most surprising interrelations."

Fuzzy Navel & Dirty Martini by self-publishing champion J.A. Konrath writing as Jack Kilborn (SYKM, Wikipedia), 4th & 5th in his Jack Daniels mystery series, originally out from Disney's Hyperion imprint in 2007 & 2008.

[deleted a bunch of descriptions of the first three novels' plots]

And now, in Dirty Martini, Jack faces her toughest adversary yet: a sicko who's poisoning the city's food supply. But that's just the start of what he has planned, because he's aiming to kill fifty thousand people in the single biggest act of terrorism the US has ever seen. Can she stop him — and decide whether to accept boyfriend Latham's surprise proposal — without destroying both her reputation and her sanity?

&

Things are going well for Lieutenant Jacqueline "Jack" Daniels of the Chicago Police Department. She has solved some of the city's toughest and most high-profile homicides. Her personal life is finally in order. Her friends and family are safe and happy. And she just got a call that eased her mind like nothing else could: Alex Kork, one of the most dangerous criminals Jack ever arrested, killed herself while in jail.

But things sour quickly when a group of vigilantes on a murderous spree decide to take down a cop and the people she cares about ... and they turn downright awful when Jack discovers that Kork may not be dead after all.

Trapped in her house with a psycho and everyone she cares about, and unable to leave because she's surrounded by snipers, the next eight hours will be the worst of Jack's life. And that's saying something.

Boston Blackie
by Jack Boyle

Currently free at:
Quote:
Whether he is fighting the police or the criminal underworld, Boston Blackie always stands up for what’s right

Sure, Boston Blackie is a jewel thief and a safecracker, but he’s a criminal with code. He ensures that the worst villains get what’s coming to them while the honorable ones stay out on the street—where, like Blackie, they do more good than harm.

In this classic collection of adventures, with his dependable wife and getaway driver, Mary, by his side, Blackie gets into and out of a dizzying array of tight spots. He escapes from prison, saves a friend from the gallows, and pulls off the gold bullion heist of a lifetime. Later adapted into serials, movies, and TV shows, Boston Blackie’s exploits are some of the most thrilling in all of crime fiction.

This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

The Unquiet Bones by Mel Starr

http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B...cm_cd_asin_lnk

Hugh of Singleton, fourth son of a minor knight, has been educated as a clerk, usually a prelude to taking holy orders. However, he feels no real calling-despite his lively faith-and he turns to the profession of surgeon, training in Paris and then hanging his sign in Oxford. Soon after, a local lord asks Hugh de Singleton to track the killer of a young woman whose bones have been found in the castle cesspool. Through his medical knowledge, Singleton identifies her as the impetuous missing daughter of a local blacksmith. The young man she loved-whom she had provoked very publicly-is quickly arrested and sentenced at Oxford. But this is just the beginning of the tale. The story of Singleton's adventure unfolds with realistic medical procedures, droll medieval wit, romantic distractions, and a consistent underlying sense of Christian compassion.

AT Drake mentions this book and the next three in the Hugh de Singleton series in his/her stand-alone thread here: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?p=2957127

I quite like the Hugh DeSingleton series, and even at $2.99 for each of the first four, which is what they are showing up for at Amazon US for me, these are good prices for this publisher - although I've purchased all of them at various times on sale or with coupons, I'm pretty sure I paid more than that...

The Salaryman's Wife by Sujata Massey is currently $.99 at Amazon US ($2.99 at other stores). Book one in the Rei Shimura series
http://www.amazon.com/Salarymans-Wif.../dp/B00EXOFE28

Quote:
Winner of the Agatha Award for Best First Novel; Nominee, Barry and Macavity Awards for Best First Mystery and Anthony Award for Best Paperback Original

Japanese-American Rei Shimura is a 27-year-old English teacher living in one of Tokyo's seediest neighborhoods. She doesn't make much money, but she wouldn't go back home to California even if she had a free ticket (which, thanks to her parents, she does.) Her independence is threatened however, when a getaway to an ancient castle town is marred by murder.

Rei is the first to find the beautiful wife of a high-powered businessman, dead in the snow. Taking charge, as usual, Rei searches for clues by crashing a funeral, posing as a bar-girl, and somehow ending up pursued by police and paparazzi alike. In the meantime, she manages to piece together a strange, ever-changing puzzle—one that is built on lies and held together by years of sex and deception.

Sharky's Machine by the late William Diehl (SYKM, Wikipedia), a cop vs espionage-ish conspiracy action thriller originally out from Delacorte Press in 1978, and much reprinted since then. Incidentally, also his first novel.

Italy, 1944: A squad of American soldiers on a dangerous secret mission is ambushed and slaughtered . . . and a fortune in gold vanishes.

Hong Kong, 1959: An aging American colonel, haunted by his wartime past, is brutally murdered in a luxurious brothel.

Atlanta, 1975: The last survivor of the fatal World War II ambush in Italy is executed at point blank range in a parking lot.

Blowing away a crazed, gun-wielding drug dealer on a crowded city bus gets police detective Sharky bounced from the narc squad into the dreaded dregs of the department--vice. That's where he stumbles on a high-priced call girl and her pimp who are fleecing rich johns in an even higher-priced blackmail scam. Together with his "machine" of hard-bitten vice squad veterans, Sharky closes in for a big sting. He doesn't count on falling for Domino, his alluring target. Or falling into the middle of the murderous design she's a part of--involving a hot presidential candidate, the shadowy multimillionaire who's backing him, and the ice-cold assassin they're using to wipe out the past . . . before it blows their future to hell.

Chameleon by the late William Diehl, whose credentials are in the post right above, so I'm not repeating them. This is some sort of action adventure thriller involving investigative reporters vs an enigmatic assassin with some kind of wacky WWII-originated conspiracy ties, originally out from Random House in 1981.

Two crack reporters are hot on the trail of a deadly assassin who’s killing world petroleum experts to hide the discovery of a new oil deposit.

FRANK O’HARA is a brilliant investigative reporter who’s been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his searing expose of the CIA. In the face of CIA retaliation – the agency has sent a string of assassins after him – O’Hara has “disappeared” into the Japanese countryside, mastering the most arduous disciplines of self-defense and mental stamina. CHARLES GORDON HOWE, the crippled owner of a Boston television station and newspaper, receives a mysterious tip on what could be the biggest story since Watergate. He decides O’Hara is the only man who could possibly break the story, and after forcing the CIA to call off its hunt, he sends ELIZA GUNN, his own top reporter, to bring O’Hara in.

Together, O’Hara and Eliza, five feet tall, tough and beautiful, embark on a far-flung journey—from Boston to the Caribbean islands and ultimately back to Japan. They are chasing someone known only as CHAMELEON, feared by all, known by none, is quite possibly the most menacing and mysteriously elusive person alive.

Exposed by by self-publishing champion J.A. Konrath writing as Jack Kilborn (SYKM, Wikipedia) & Ann Voss, in their Codename: Chandler series of short espionage action thrillers (the Amazon listing says it's 5th, but the author's note says that this is a prequel to the actual series). Those are probably self-pub collaborations, but you may want to give them a try if you happened to enjoy Konrath's writing in his Jack Daniels mystery series originally out from Disney's Hyperion imprint, 2 of which are still also offered free.

She's an elite spy, working for an agency so secret only three people know it exists. Trained by the best of the best, she has honed her body, her instincts, and her intellect to become the perfect weapon.

CODENAME: CHANDLER

Before special operative Chandler was forced to FLEE, she executed the most difficult missions—and most dangerous people—for the government. So when she’s tasked with saving a VIP’s daughter from human traffickers, Chandler expects the operation to be by the numbers…until she uncovers a secret that will endanger the entire population of New York City, and possibly the world.

EXPOSED

Death is in her blood.

Dog on It: A Chet and Bernie Mystery
by Spencer Quinn
Quote:
Chet, the wise and lovable canine narrator of Dog on It, and Bernie, a down-on-his-luck private investigator, are quick to take a new case involving a frantic mother searching for her teenage daughter. This well-behaved and gifted student may or may not have been kidnapped, but she has definitely gotten mixed up with some very unsavory characters. With Chet’s highly trained nose leading the way, their hunt for clues takes them into the desert to biker bars and other exotic locales—until the bad guys try to turn the tables and the resourceful duo lands in the paws of peril. Spencer Quinn’s irresistible mystery kicks off a delightful new series that will have readers panting for more.
I've read this and it's pretty charming. I definitely recommend it!

Death On a Sunday Morning [Kindle Edition]
J F Straker

blurb:
Quote:
A bank in a country town is robbed in the dead of night, and a couple left mercilessly locked inside the vault.

Meanwhile, in a small village, a car explodes into smithereens.

The two passengers are violently killed, as well as an innocent passer-by.

In another village, a woman is kidnapped from her beautiful house, and subsequently found splayed on a bed in a tiny attic, strangled to death.

With three cases on their hands, each the more puzzling than the next, the police begin to realise that these deaths are intrinsically linked.

But their investigations are hampered by the kidnapped woman’s husband.

He spins a sprawling web of lies to avoid incriminating himself elsewhere.

The final face-off and bitter conflict between two groups of criminals leads to a grim and grisly denouement in an isolated riverside cottage.

'Death on a Sunday Morning' is a fast-paced crime thriller that promises to grip readers from the first page to the last.

Thunder Island by Larry Johns, vintage action adventure thriller originally out from UK publisher Robert Hale in 1980.

Greed, intrigue and triple-cross; the component parts of disaster.

Gilby Nash, demolition expert extraordinary, reaches for a glittering prize on a sun-soaked island where the bullet and the knife are never far away.
(I know this sounds cryptic, but the rest of the blurb reads like an equally cryptic excerpt from the novel)

Johns also offers a newly-written geopolitical action adventure suspense thriller about some kind of conspiracy involving China using a US ex-military mercenary to overthrow the Congo government in order to scoop the lucrative mineral rights, if you think you might like to try it.
