I'm amazed this will be available in Canada right off the bat. The add-free version is still $10 cheaper than what the Aura will be selling for. I think the reviews will sway me into which device I purchase, but still, Kobo might want to think about matching Amazon's price.

A bit unrelated, but....I can't help but wonder if Amazon is going to stop updating the non-touchscreen Kindle. They have not released an updated model, at least not yet. It seems like they should have released a newer model with the Carta screen. Last year they updated the year old grey model with a black case. That was a lackluster update for sure. This year it looks like no update. Perhaps that model doesn't sell well enough.

yes me too. Amazon originally offered me an upgrade to PW as my KK had battery problems. I had so many replacements (aout 15 in all - is this a record?) that I was quite worried they would cancel my account. Eventually one of their agents suggested I buy another new PW as he thought replacements might sometimes turn out to be 'refurbished' rather than new. I wasn't initially any more impressed with the new order; it had a variable pink band about 1/2 inch deep at the top, with a 2" greeny blue area below it. they sent me a couple more which were worse and in the end I decided the pinky topped one was much more even overall than the others - and there was virtually no shading along the bottom - so as i liked the PW technology better than the KK by this time, I kept it. I do notice the pink and blue/green areas when I'm reading in the evening but I can cope with it.

I have noticed that the touch screen is more sluggish that it used to be, even after restarting, so speeding that up would be a bonus. Not sure why this might be; I probably have about 3 - 400 books on it at any one time.

if the PW2's screen/lighting was really really even I might find it hard to resist!

Wow! I gave up after just three units. But I had, and still have, a perfectly usable Kindle Touch and thus decided to stick with it instead of the wonky screens I kept getting with the PW1 units. I'm sure hoping they fixed that with the PW2.

I noticed the same on mine!!!!!
Not sure how many books I have on it now, but I REALLY should remove the majority of them again.

OK, sooooo, I ended up preordering one after all, after I read about the Carta screen tech. I'll send it back and won't ask for replacements if it ends up the same disaster like last year's, or if there aren't any perceivable improvements to the screen or the light.

Well, I might have guessed that ....

... after all, I have just received my Paperwhite and a version of the "basic" kindle (which is since the announcement now available for EUR 49 instead of EUR 69) brought to Malaysia by a German colleague.

I am really hoping you are happy with the new one. I remember how many you went through. How you had to deal with a round around from Kindle support. I am excited and can't wait for pics and user reviews. I know I will get one just because it's a new screen but I will wait toward the holidays to get mine.

... Hmm, am thinking whether I should return the one I just bought... just my luck ... waiting 1 year after the first PW I bought, and then receiving it a week before the launch of the new one, that is supposed to be remarkedly better.

I was only on here a few days ago saying how my Sony pr505 had finally given up on me and was going to wait if they bought a new paperwhite out ,so the wait is over and have just pre-ordered mine.

Can I ask something is there anyway you can change the lighting on the paperwhite, my Sony was ideal for reading in the dark I had a cover with the light on and it was ideal for me.

Hi Harry

What I meant was I didn't want anything that was to bright, and I was able to tone the brightness down, but have just read you can change the brightness for reading in any light which is a plus for me.

Yes, you can certainly adjust the lighting level, from "barely visible" to "extremely bright". There are 24 brightness settings.
