This is just plain irritating. If what you say is true, Entourage is ignoring their long suffering customer base of original eDGe owners and going to give the update to the Pocket eDGe first??? That's just plain crap.

As I've said before, I'm legally blind and I was hoping the eDGe was going to be a device I could recommend to others, but the lack of response to enhancements like Landscape e-Ink and TTS pretty much guarantees I can't.

I understand your feelings of frustration. The timing of the Froyo (2.2) release was communicated to the Forum Community by Entourage personnel some weeks ago. The upgrade to Froyo is highly anticipated, but the usefulness of the eDGe remains even with the currently installed version of Android (1.6). The chief benefits of Froyo, to my limited knowledge, will be improved speed and access to more applications that simply won't run on older versions of Android.

I hear you, but keep in mind that one of the problematic issues about Froyo seems to be scaling up to larger screens. This isn't a problem on the Pocket Edge, so it's probably easier to get it running smoothly there. If Entourage does release Froyo for the PE before the full-sized EE, I doubt it's due to preferential treatment, and seriously believe it's for technical reasons.

A lot of other devices can upgrade. I do not know why it is such a problem here.

Those other devices have small screens.

Not true. I have seen this posted on these forums way too many times to let it pass again. There are many Android tablets available that presently run Froyo. Here's one: http://www.amazon.com/Viewsonic-G-Ta...4945135&sr=1-2

Notice the 10" MultiTouch screen?

If they can do it, then I submit that the small screen excuse doesn't hold water.
There are a whole assortment of Android Pads from China currently available, and running 2.1 or 2.2......

It's worth noting that this common complaint about the Viewsonic: "The software is the big deal breaker here. It comes with this version of android 2.2 made by Viewsonic in which everybody's opinion it's the worst thing ever made." (emphasis mine)

The products were even recalled in December, sounds like because of the software issues. In the amazon listing, comments refer to Viewsonic finally letting people choose regular Android over their own Android version.

So I'm not entirely sure it's fair to use this product as an example of a larger Android tablet currently running Froyo. It looks like Viewsonic (unsuccessfully) tried their own hack version of 2.2, and a lot of owners were left trying to hack it themselves to make it useable.

Note: I've never used one, so I'm just going off what other people have written, but I was looking into tablets yesterday and reading about this one. If someone actually has one, please comment.

If you read other site's reviews, you will see that the "recalled" story is not true. One retailer removed them from their shelves due to customer complaints. In response, Viewsonic released an update which, as you have stated, allows users to choose the stock Android interface (like the edge uses). Those users mostly praise this tablet.
If I remember correctly, our very own Chubulor has one of these. Hopefully he will chime in here.
My original point was that we can't keep throwing out the tired line about Froyo not coming to the eDGe due to it's screen size. Others have shown this not to be true.
If someone wants to say that Froyo is not available for the eDGe due to the customizations that must be made in order to support the ereader, that is a more accurate assessment.

You out there Chubulor???

I think that the issue is not so much with the big screen but with the eink + wacom screen. I guess they need to write drivers for them.

OK so I have a friend that is an Android programmer at Itson Inc. We were at a party and I was asking him about it etc. He was telling me that they should have already had the update. I am really not sure what they are doing but it should not be that much of a problem.

Except that enTourage has clearly stated what the problem is and Google's statements support that, which is why Google went so far as to say that Froyo is decidedly tablet unfriendly.

And then we keep coming back to the circular argument of, "Why not just go with Gingerbread instead of FroYo?" "Because Entourage is almost finished with porting FroYo and they would have to start all over with a new version of Android which could take even longer to push out."

There's no problem with big screen (there's many chinese 10inch tablets which using 2.1-2.3 android)
There's no problem with eink or wacom driver (it's not an part of android, but of linux kernel, so once well written it will work smoothly with any kernel versions).
There's no problem with 2 displays (as android by itself use only one display).
e.t.c.
the only possible problem is hardware requries incompability. Everything else can be fixed.

**** I would be happy if I had an estimated date for delivery. People have quoted often that they are not stating a date because of competition knowing etc. That doesn't seem to be a problem though since the competition has left us behind. I seriously doubt they would care that Edge is finally updating to an older version.
