I loved the way you set date and time, but .. on Duokan, perhaps there are no date-time service. Have Wifi, and there is nothing on Amazon under their system either. So, what site offers date&time service - a small function should be able to implement, huh ?
( wish I had some tools to craft this myself..but..my programming skills are simply sooo impressive ..)

Regardless, can someone find out if the guys ad duokan can write some uninstall.bins, or a shell script to reset to stock install. I only speak English so I can't use their forums.

Press alt+M opens Mp3 player. You see a numbered list of tunes from your music folder under player control. Five-way give you play, pause, next. Alt+S closed player. When you use volume control, you get a little visual on volume level.

@FethryDuck: I've tried all possible permutations of Alt+Shift+G, Shift+Alt+G to no avail. (or I'd post a screenshot of Mp3 player. Hmm. I'm getting busy with that porn collection...
huh, that sound like a new function. I have not seen a numbered list. Else I have rechecked your info here, and it is correct.

Reread your input here, SunLight - I have never noticed anything like this under the Amazon system. You are sure about this ? What you say does match the Duokan however. At the top of the home page, (see attached page) where you can search, sort, and set what you want to have shown on your home page. It simply sound like you may have been in Duokan.

Sorry, if boring and perhaps too many screenshots, but thought I could add something that may be used in FAQ/Manual - what ever. But in fact, it was your pages I was interested in seeing... somewhat ironic...

These screenshot from duokan.com show what I see when booting up in a Kindle 2i. Incidentally, I tried the #3 selection, and it just booted into Kindle:

http://duokan.com/forum/thread-273-1-1.html

Here are other screenshots that show pdf menu in Chinese -- it looks the same in English.

More screenshots from Duokan website. Here you can see pdf, then pdf in Smart Layout.

Further down, you can see English dictionary at work:

@montalex - oh, great ! thank you

It is amazing, here I am with a broken arm, doing my best to show you a bit of this software, and it is in Chinese, and it is difficult, but how the heck has it been for them ? Have you looked at the software ? Attach a file from it - here you see what you can set your Kindle to ! If Amazon had joined forces with Microsoft, then maybe we would see something like this. It is just amazing.

Now, granted - some fonts are not as they could be. But we can fix those fonts, and we know how our languages should read, so.. I have a hard time using google translate, how should I know how to set some characters and fonts for someone half around the globe !

There are more "source" then you would expect - it would not be understood even if it were in English. It is pretty sophisticated stuff.

Yes, I am on to it, but... would you like to know how many Chinese words I understand ?
So, you need to be patient with me - ah... very !

When I first installed Duokan, I noticed that the date was right, but the time was off. I was only able to set the time in jumps of a couple of hours (!?), so I left it. Now it displays the correct time at the top of each page. It must have synced with Kindle when I restarted. And I assume that Kindle gets its time when you are on the 3G network, which I haven't been on since I installed Duokan.

I really appreciate, Duck, that you brought this to our attention, because it will be a great addition to the Kindle world, either directly, or because Amazon will implement some of their ideas and improve their firmware. Of course, it doesn't look like they will ever update firmware for my Kindle 2, so I may have to depend on Duokan. I registered on their site, as you suggested. I'd like to send them a little thanks. I'm a little worried that, if I use Google Translate, I might be asking someone to have sex with me, rather than politely thanking them. Then someday, a huge Chinese man will appear at my door with a suitcase... and... and...

Oh, man - this is the craziest stunt I have done in a long time. I have tried to convey the issues we got here, but I understand zero/nada/none of their language. If someone drop me a message over there, how on earth am I to figure it out ? And it is large ! So large that I find it strange they have no English section..but then maybe it says something about the future.

My message at *www.duokan.com* may be ignored at their site, but in any case -

1. Howto uninstall the system:

There should be some uninstall script. Do you have something like that ?
Unknown parts are left on the system. Here are some:
/etc/init.d
/etc/RC5.d
/etc/rcS.d

and probably more. So, an uninstall script is needed.

2. Printscreen does not work:

This makes it difficult to even explain where/how something is wrong.

3. Source Code:

Any source code ? Pretty lost without.

I only have wifi on this one, and the clock did not keep up during some reboots, etc. So, I thought - why bother - it's timing are good enough if you can adjust it now and then over network. Have no clue about the hardware. There may be some time-device somewhere. With the power management circuitry perhaps ?

Any idea what Amazon supply in their developers tools - do they hook up with serial line or what ?

btw. some post said there were no more development on Kindle2, and they viewed it with some interest of that reason.

@FethryDuck: I haven't a clue about Amazon developer's tools. Full disclosure: I am a 60 year old male with limited computer skills and absolutely no knowledge of programming. (And I like to use bad language, apparently.) I'm just a reader who likes the Kindle, and want to see it improve, especially regarding epub and pdf reading. Duokan is definitely better in those departments. I even though about buying a reconditioned Kindle 2 so that I could mess around with the one I have without fear of bricking it.

Keep it up! Thanks,

Montalex

I don't quite get how the bootloader even works, it looks like option 3 boots into USBnet mode + telnet server? Looks like it, they also provide usb net driver in their install package:

echo "sub Lan"
mntroot rw
rmmod g_file_storage
rmmod g_ether
modprobe g_ether
ifconfig usb0 192.168.0.88
route add default gw 192.168.0.1
echo nameserver 208.67.222.222 > /etc/resolv.d/resolv.conf.default
echo nameserver 208.67.220.220 >> /etc/resolv.d/resolv.conf.default
cp /etc/resolv.d/resolv.conf.default /var/run/resolv.conf
/mnt/us/DK_System/bin/busybox telnetd
display_logo_screen
mntroot ro
return 0;

It does a check for mv /etc/rc5.d/S96rundk /etc/rc5.d/s96rundk constantly, I assume it's because the partition is fat32 and it has to make sure it's lowercase, and they copied it over directly rather than extracting it from a tarball.

dkswitchmenu.bin seems to take the input for the 3 menu choices?
dkswitch.bin seems to boot into the os

From reading the scripts, here are the files it appears to install:

(these are generated + removed by install.sh)

/etc/rcS.d/S79switch
/etc/rc5.d/s96rundk
/etc/rc5.d/S96rundk
/etc/rc5.d/rundk.sh
/dev/DK_Debug.log

(debug log is probably not even created I think debugging is disabled, should see file in DK_SYSTEM folder cat /dev/DK_Debug.log >> /mnt/us/DK_System/DK_Debug.log)

It removes these 2 files all on its own for some reason, since they are in /dev i assume they are also generated by it because usually stuff should not be in /dev:
/dev/viewinfodat.txt
/dev/viewinfodat1.txt

What is the kindle's normal rc script?
What happens if these 4 are simply removed?

Yep, that's a somewhat bloated (ie. don't need the gw & ns setup when you're not doing tethering, AFAIK) usbnet+telnet (without tethering) setup.

Most of the .bin files (those ~245K anyway) are fb dumps (ie. the bootup screen).

The S <=> s switch is probably the horrible way by which they enable/disable their startup script. (rc is very anal, it has to be (S|K)[:digit:]{2}[:alnum:]* (case sensitive) or the script is skipped).

The original framework is started from S95framework @ rc5.

Removing those four init scripts should be enough to stop duokan from starting, but there may be some other non critical stuff to delete for a proper uninstall. There's a usb_switch dropped in init.d from somewhere if I remember correctly for example. And the mess in /dev (WTH?!).
