I have read both series, and like them both, but I'm pretty easy to please.

I too, wish the Holme books would become available in e-book. Since I pretty much only read e-books these days it has been a while (several years) since I read the Holme books, so I'm going a bit on memory here about them. I've been reading the Camilleri series more consistently whenever I can snag the e-books on sale.

The Holme books are set in northern Italy, although Inspector Peroni himself is not - he was from somewhere else in Italy. The Camilleri books are set in Sicily, and Sicily forms an integral part of the stories - you couldn't imagine them being set anywhere else. I don't remember having quite such a strong sense of place in the Holme series.

Inspector Montalbano is a bit more world-weary than I remember Inspector Peroni being, and as some others have mentioned above, there is also a fair amount of dry humor in the Camilleri books - more than I remember there being in the Holme books.

I'm not sure that just having both series set in Italy is enough to recommend one based on the other, unless maybe you really love Italy. But the Camilleri series is excellent IMO (and those of some others above), and worth checking out.

P.S. I assume if you do love Italy, you have also found Donna Leon's Commissario Brunetti series, set in Venice?

The way those Urls are supposed to work you should either get 'not found' or a list of freebies.

I used readeriq.com to see the US price.

Peroni and his sister were Neapolitan street kids. I’m guessing they were set in the 50s or 60s although there are no specific dates mentioned. Thinking about it, probably the 60s because of the Red Brigade and I seem to recall the Moroni(?) kidnapping being mentioned. I got them all in the end, although it’ll be a while before I read them. (I find short stories are best to read on the commute and they’re mostly SFF on the Kindle app.)

I’ve seen the Leons but haven’t read any yet. Too much else to read!

FYI, for lovers of mysteries set in Italy: also popular are two series by Lindsey Davis: the Marcus Didius Falco Mystery Series, whose first installment, The Silver Pigs, is set in Rome and Britannia during AD 70, just after the year of the four emperors, and a follow up, Flavia Alba Mystery Series, about Marcus' daughter who follows in his footsteps.

I knew Peroni was from somewhere else <g>! I hope you enjoy the Camilleri titles - I really think you will.

We just went on vacation to Venice, literally flying home today, which I have been wanting to do for years, before it vanishes into permanent acqua alta, and I am very much enjoying rereading all of the Donna Leon/Inspector Brunetti titles I have, and having fun nodding my head fake-wisely about the vaporetto, acqua alta, La Fenice, the catwalk around the Arsenale, the Giudecca, Mestre, and a bunch of other local stuff that I now have real mental pictures for.

Of course, all this re-reading is not doing my TBR pile much good, but WTH....

Based on the excellent reviews this set of five LGBT MM mysteries may be of interest to some. All the books have over 100 reviews and are rated from 4.4 stars to 4.8 stars on Amazon. Curl Up And Dye Mysteries by Aimee Nicole Walker.

Rich, I read a book yesterday that you might be interested: The Deluded by 'Wolf Augustus' (Oliver Bosman) It's an attempt to write something like the old pulp crime books, but with gay characters.

The book wasn't much of a mystery. It wasn't especially pulpy either. But it was pretty interesting. In 1949 London, a closeted writer hooks up with a guy who tells him stories of how he rescued two German Jewish ladies, while flashback chapters tell what really happened.

If it sounds interesting, the book is on sale for $0.99 at Amazon. He's written a second book: The Estranged that is also $0.99. The two books are completely unrelated except for trying to emulate old crime books.

When I looked, The Deeds of the Disturber was $0.99 at Bookshout, which I will never buy from, $2.99 at Amazon, and $6.47 at Kobo (VIP price), so I bought it at Kobo and price matched Bookshout. I'll get an additional 9 cents off, but it's also a credit.
