The Vent and Rant Thread

i am so annoyed. am supposed to be doing a music video with a group (it's groupwork) for one of my minor classes, and let's just say that it's only me who is constantly asking for input from the others and NONE of them are taking initiative. i made a yahoo groups so we could talk about it over the weekend and shoot the video on tuesday, but only 2 so far have responded to my group invitations. this sucks. well, guess what. i'm not the one who's going to fail if we don't do the effing video. they're supposed to be ADULTS, but i guess that's what happens when your educational system allows 16-17 year olds to start college :P

i don't know what to do. obviously, if they don't want to do the video,i can't force them, but i won't put their names as part of the group, that's all :| i'm tired of trying to get along with lazy people.

That sounds like a plan to me. Put down your name, and write up what you contributed. If you have to, add their names with a blank beside them ... to indicate they didn't do any of the parts. Or, if you can get away with it, don't list them at all, like you suggested. Good luck!
Is there a time of day that those other folks would be more available? Perhaps they have different schedules than you, youngster!

Let me be the Devils advocate for a moment, part of the exercise could be to see who steps up and takes charge, getting the other people to do what is needed would be stepping up. It sounds like you have done that to a point, now go get your Jack boots on and make them do their tasks. Telling your Prof that they didn't help isn't going to do much good. If I were the Prof I would pass or fail the group as a whole. did you select someone to be a project leader?

I really feel for you, I have been in that situation far to many times in my career both in school and work. Go kick some ass and you'll feel better

@mortis: i'm a reluctant leader. i don't want to do it, but my sister basically said the same thing as you did, and she added that people like those shouldn't be asked to think (she said this in a joking manner) and just be told what to do. i'm just not very good with all that creative stuff, but she did help me with some ideas.

this ebook i'm reading is pacifying me, though. at the start of the book, the author acknowledged his proofreader, and i knew then i would not be encountering as much errors. and i was right. i think only one or two in over a hundred pages. i'm very pleased, and the author has won awards for the series

oh god. i tend to be really bossy when i'm leader (not to the point of insulting everyone, just i guess there's something grating about my personality ), simply because i'm anal about certain things.

i wanted to use the group's creativity, that's why i keep asking for their input. but they just smile at me like dummies and don't say a thing. damnit. most of my classmates are business students, as well. how can they be effective in the workplace if they don't air their own ideas when they're asked to? i guess they're shy, but that's why i try not to lose my temper. i'm trying to get them to talk, but there's a limit to my smiles :P

Poor you. I know how you feel! Me and a friend always had the same problem. Some teachers noticed that some students were letting other group members do all the work and to try to remedy this each student had to hand in an evaluation of how the group worked together, also grading the other group member.

speaking of, i wish amazon lists an approximate number of pages. some books don't have it, and i do try to approximate by the file size, but that's not a sure thing either :P

I got my only F for a group project. I did not have time for it. My parents were in the hospital dying. I was a grown woman with responsibilities. I worked full time and the other two girls wanted to meet and plan and stuff like that. I told them to decide what we would do and that I could meet them for an hour or so to pull it together.

They decided to chat when we met, instead of getting down to brass tacks, so I left pretty soon. They gave a very nice presentation, and I sat there looking at the class. They got A's, I got an F, and moved on. Still got a B in the class, because presentations did not count for much.

I remember it so clearly because it was a grad class from just a few years ago.
