yeah. anne rice explained that too. which is why i found it so sweet, because they had to express their feelings/affections (what little they had, anyway), in other ways

Real rant time again.

This is about images and browser takeovers.

While searching images for another thread I clicked on a Google thumbnail. And guess what? It tells me that it has detected a virus/hard disk/ operating system problem/ etc., and needs to scan my computer to "whatever".

No, this didn't come from a porn site. I've gotten similar pop-ups from many different, and normal looking, pictures.

So with a brave heart (and an updated virus checker) I tried the same site with the latest Chrome and Firefox browsers. I haven't tried it with the latest Internet Explorer because I simply don't care for it.

Both Firefox and Chrome had to be forced into a shutdown. When these sites take over the browser they don't let you click on anything but "OK". And that is something I NEVER do.

So I reboot the computer and switch to the latest Ubuntu linux which is on a separate drive and Google image the same words. Click on the same image (from within Google Chrome) and guess what.

I now see that I have won a $1,000 Wal-Mart card and all I have to do is to type in my email address and click "OK".

But the same problem exists. You can't exit the website.

Not being familiar with linux I tried CTL-ALT-DEL. Apparently linux doesn't use that to let you force programs to end, so I just hit the off switch, and went back to Windows 7.

I thought linux was supposed to be better than Windows?

PS - It also doesn't matter what anti-virus is running. Scripts are disabled too.

Kindly provide the URL in a PM? I am trying to think of something that could cause the symptoms you describe on both Windows and Linux, in several different browsers, and with A/V on and scripting disabled. I'm failing.

lol! :P

well, just finished the book. it seemed that the errors were just in the first part of the book, and the rest were blissfully unaffected. looks like i'll be getting the other parts in the series

hmmm...they do have a unique way of getting people to vote

man, sure is hot here...most schools have already let out for summer, but my uni is on a trimestral basis so no vacation yet

Darn games. I'm not a gamer, I never have been a gamer, and I thought I never would be a gamer. Then I got that blasted iPad. I'm now hooked on Solitaire on it.

A PM with the link has been sent. The results of clicking on the link is different depending on which OS you use.

Both of the ones I tested yesterday resulted in a situation where your only choice was to click on "OK", of force a shutdown of the browser. I didn't bother testing today’s link using Ubuntu linux, but it would probably be the same.

DMcCunney may find the commonality that they all share, but if it restricts the internet's usefulness too much then I would probably just live with the annoyance of forcing a browser shutdown every now and then.

I'm hoping that he doesn't come up with "You fool! You had a check mark in the "I want viruses" box."

PS - yesterdays link has been shut down, but I was able to find another one to send him.

Try SCRABBLE free (for iphone). Play against yourself. At least it improves the mind! (I just this minute got the scrabble game.)
