Very worried
First, by the way, the reboot after cleaning took more than 20 minutes!
I am now very suspicious about Calibre activities. After reboot, I started 'cleaning' again, and there was nothing else to clean. I also removed 3 version of .net (same version), for Spanish, German, and Nederland. How did they come here ? No English (I would understanf this), just French, that I keep. What I really don't like is : - Why is Calibre looking at Windows Updates ? (By the way, the Update process by Win take almost 10 minutes, but it never FREEZE anything). I would understand checking the versions of some programs, even the version of Win 7, but why the UPDATES at all ? It is quite clear from the Proc log that the freezing occurs there. I try to reattach the .csv log now. - Worse : When cleaning, I saw a strange program called 'Bonjour' from Apple. I immediately un-installed it, but it asked 'This may prevent Calibre.exe from running. Do you still want to remove it. I did, without any visible effect. Is that a spy, a trojan or what else ? I also tried to make Calibre run as a Vista. No dice. |

Mine says 166 fonts. I would be very surprised if that was the problem. I wrote in VB a program that checks the fonts to see what to use. It never freezes, and in fact is very quick to do that, even in debug mode.

Bonjour is part of mdns; a tool used to allow computers to advertise their services and other computers on the same network segment to discover them. Used by calibre companion to allow the android application to find the server.
While it might seem that calibre is looking at the updates, it's actually one of the components used by calibre that is doing that; maybe the video driver, maybe QT but not something that calibre does or cares about. If you do upload logs, please upload the RAW form and not the CSV format that procmon can save. |

bonjour is "mostly harmless" apple software, it sneaks on from a variety of sources .
it will launch whenever it sees a relevant trigger event. You can remove it via control panel . that may help with the freeze issue - may not. google bonjour software... Bonjour is Apple's implementation of Zero-configuration networking (Zeroconf), a group of technologies that includes service discovery, address assignment, and hostname resolution. Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's OS X and iOS operating systems. Bonjour can also be installed onto computers running Microsoft Windows. Bonjour components may also be included within other software such as iTunes and Safari. |

It seems that the "Windows Update" cleanup may have been a little overenthusiastic. I've just been prompted to reinstall two updates - one "important" and the other "recommended" - from January and February this year, respectively.

Cleanup windows install files does just that: cleaning up already installed patches. These files are just kept so you are able to uninstall/re-install any patch when you encounter problems. But normally those install files just eat up disk-space, so no harm to remove them after installation.
That you are prompted for install new patches can be triggered by some other patch / update cycle from Microsoft. Due to dependencies (unknown to us mortals) installing 1 patch can always lead to a waterfall of additional needed patches (believe me I have been there recently after configuring a new machine). So good practice is after some update to always re-query again and again for any other patches until none are found. |

It also uses the users choice. ![]() There have been earlier cases where M$ updates did something that made the current user choice invalid. This caused QT/Calibre issues. The other sometimes a issue was the system Interface style choice. |

Not much activity on the system. Zonealarm was stopped, alas Avira was still doing some stuff, even if disabled alld functions. Only clock setup was running to get the time. Bonjour is gone, thanks heaven.... |

So the freeze now lasts 21 seconds? Not multiples of minutes as before?
I note that the security catalog scan starts at 14:43:55.3415781 and ends at 14:44:10.6434116. |

Just to add to the confusion, it looks like (I am not certain) that starting
'Corel Paint Shop Pro x5' (not to the level of the older one PSP!) would also freeze my system, but only for 3 or 4 secondes. The clock is still running there, just the task bar and clic on a desk icon are stuck. Out of subject, I would like to add that Corel was reluctant to analyse the fact that when their program starts, the Light level of the desk is increased by 5 ticks, and Nvidia panel just has to set up and down to normal level to reset the desk (Corel still running !) Another of the Gremlins in PC ? |

Shorter freeze
Hello.
Just to confirm that now, after several tries, the freeze starts 2 seconds after the double clic, and lasts for 18 seconds afterwards (first after boot, as usual, even if it is one hour later). Is it because of the 'updates cleaning' ? I don't know Also, someone said thet 'bonjour' was related to 'calibre companion'. I never installed this, and I don't have any android device. |
