For myself, there is only 4700 files in catroot and 8 in catroot2

I forgot to say that the approximative time for the freeze in my Procmon were
8:36:xx and 8:46:00 I cannot be more precise as there were no time displayed anywere.

It may be a concidence, but I saw this 'sound' stuff in the log. I wonder if it could be related to some occurence of a shut down daleyed by a process, message saying 'explorer cannot run system sound xxx' ???

Assuming you are up-to-date with windows updates, one possible fix is Windows Disk Cleanup (in Accessories). Sometime in the last year or so Microsoft added "Windows update cleanup" to the list of possible tasks. Doing this cleanup (supposedly) removes all cat files that have been superseded by something else or are for some other reason no longer useful.

Registry mess can also affect the catalog scan. If you haven't done it you might consider running something like CCCleaner's registry cleaner. Be sure to make a backup of the registry, perhaps a restore point, and for paranoia a full system image backup.

Is it 'Chat Laid' ?

I did a disc cleanup like you said. It took quite a while (10 minutes) but at no time during scan and cleaning was any system freeze. The files are stil there, even that the option was set, and the cleaning said 'update files'.

Also, I am running regularly Ccleaner to check the registry.

Anyway, after this, Calibre did the usual 50 s freeze. Sorry !

See my previous post - the files only get deleted after a reboot.

Both logs you attached seem to have the same content. In both of them, what I think is the freeze starts at 08:49:05 and ends at 08:49:35.

Isn't it the translation of Chaley (LOL)

Here is another .csv. The precise time is 14:34:31, and clock restarted at 14:35:41. No Avira, no Zonealarm, just a clock and Calibre

It looks like Calibre was searching in the updates. Why, for my sake !!!!

Anyway, rebooted, tried 'cleaner' again, which found nothing to clean, did another Registry clean, updated to 2.31...

And well, still the same 65 seconds dead (the cursor is round for 10 seconds, then the arrow is back and can move, but nothing works.

It looks like Win started a 'cabbuilding' process in the while, but that has nothing to do with the problem

Catroot is now 3900 files.

Catroot is now 3900 files.

There is no attachment. Also, I can use them only if they are in PML format.

One wonders why you so many more files than either HarryT or I have. You might try running the cleaner again to see if it proposes more savings.

my (non freezing) win 7 sp1 home premium 64 bit machine has only 2271 files in catroot, and 8 in catroot2.

i use disc cleaner regularly.

(My W7 has 134 entries)

IIRC in the old days, everyone and their dog include a bushel load of fonts as part of the install that soon overwhelmed W3

Control Panel -> Fonts shows 277 items.

I never knew the reboot was part of the process.
I saw the same sequences on reboot.

And, Yes it also takes multiple cycles (passes)
