Tools Software Jailbreak for PW2, PW3, PW3W, KT2, KV, KOA and KT3

I have PW2 with FW 5.4.3.2. I jailbroke it years ago. It has KUAL v2.7. I want to update it to 5.8.8
The instruction says if you don't have mrpackages folder the jailbreak has damaged. I don't have such folder. So, if I update it, my jailbreak would be lost?
what should I do?

PW-2 users running firmware 5.4.4.2 or older, go directly to:
PW-2 Early firmware versions, jail break

Your in the wrong thread.

Once you get there, the two sentences that apply to you are:

Start by simply installing the JB hotfix. This will take care of the basics.

After that, you will NEED to use MRPI to install any and all other custom update packages.

Then install the Amazon update to 5.8.8
(Although I can't imagine why anyone would want to, the only significant difference between that one and 5.8.7 is that you can't jail break it.)

A question for those who know more than I do about this topic:

I just took a look at the documentation for the rescue pack and it indicates that placing an empty file "ENABLE_DIAGS" on the exported kindle USB drive will result in having the kindle boot the diags partition next time. Would it be possible from that point to either directly install the developer keys or to install an jailbroken main partition? If so, I would think this would still function even with the 5.8.8 version.

Once you handle the catch-22 situation of that procedure.

The device has to be jail broken to install the rescue pack.

But if you install it on a jail broken device, and later lose all or part of the jail break, then yes, you can boot to diags, ssh (or telnet) into the device and fix it. That was the RP's original purpose.

I want to let Amazon get fully committed to this 5.8.8(+) firmware version, that is:
All in-stock Kindles have 5.8.8 or newer installed before sale.

Then we will jailbreak it.

And maybe even have some new Kindle models by that time to play with.
Unless I die of old age before that happens.

We have never seen a serial number like that, and it does not fit into the serial number scheme Amazon uses.

Main menu bar, settings, device info -
(Or similar, depends on your firmware version).

Use the first six characters of the serial number and this table:

The same table you used to determine the model nickname used here.
While you are looking at the Device Info panel, make note of what firmware version it is now running.

If not in the table - we don't support it.
If in the table and right hand column does not say when support was added - we don't support it.
If in the table and it says "not supported", then we don't support it.

So there is no access to the login prompt prior to installing the RP? Given the purpose of the diags partition I would have expected something to address things that they didn't build into their menu system. I hoped for a login prompt and soft keyboard support to use it, but perhaps I am an optimist.

I have the RP and CRP installed, so I don't have a virgin diags partition to play with to check myself. Perhaps someone currently stuck at 5.8.8 would be willing to experiment with some guidance from people here. In the worst case they could probably contact support and get the unit replaced if they can't get out of diags mode.

Removing sshd from 'Diags' and removing the 'ENABLE_DIAGS' flag file feature happened very early in the evolution of the 5.x software.

I do not expect that Amazon/Lab126 will re-enable those, even by accident, in the touch screen devices.

In that case how is the diags partition started in the touch screen devices as the device comes from Amazon? If it can't be booted then there is no need to waste the space to hold it.

PS: I did a bit more of a search and see that "idme -d --bootmode diags && reboot" will start the diags partition, but how can that be issued running 5.8.8 firmware?

If the 'Main' system can not be found (and maybe for some other boot-time reasons), it will boot the 'Diags' system.

Keep in mind that the 'Diags' system is programmed while the flash chip is still on the tape reel, before assembly.

Installing the 'Main' system comes (much) later in the production process.
Going by the evidence of the (deleted) files left on the flash storage device, twice.

First the general purpose 'Main' system used for factory testing (called: "Factory Initial" in this thread) and then later, when ready to ship, the "Customer" firmware version of 'Main'.

I write that not because I visited the factory, but because that is the way things are done in high-volume, electronic gadget production.

During the time between completing the production testing and installing the customer firmware - the device sits in storage until enough are on hand to fill the next shipment order.
If you like playing with math. you can figure out how many Kindles fit in a container ship 40 foot, high cube, container.

One of the things of interest -
Now that 5.8.8 will not load the production testing firmware image, it would be nice to find out what the people in the "Kindle Refurbishing" business are using to recover Kindles.

There are package types defined, that are rarely seen "in the wild". Maybe they are using one of them now.

It isn't worth the effort to start reverse engineering the production recovery process until Kindles start shipping from the factory with 5.8.8 pre-installed.

I will concede that the issue does not become critical until 5.8.8+ is the only game in town. This does suggest to me, however, that perhaps we should recommend those that may not see the need for a jailbreak yet still take the precaution of installing and maintaining the block against Amazon initiated upgrades to ensure they will still have that option in the future. As you noted above, 5.8.8 has no redeeming features over 5.8.7 and once you are on 5.8.8 you are stuck for the indefinite future.

I have been thinking about the same sort of advice, posted on the main Kindle forum.

I.E:
Do it now or postpone installing 5.8.8.
In a few more words of course.
