Yes, it does, and it is. I've been a casual coffee drinker for most of my life, more as a social beverage than as a caffeine-delivery system. Then a couple of years ago, I had a chance to drink some fresh, properly roasted single cultivar (varietal) coffee and my world changed. I found that really good coffee, properly roasted, fresh, is on a completely different 'level' than the mass-market stuff everyone thinks of as coffee. Even Starbucks pales in comparison because the commercial specialty vendors roast their beans into oblivion, destroying the character of the coffee beans, which replaces flavor and complexity. So I bought a small roaster and I buy green, unroasted beans from any of dozens of countries and hundreds of coffee farms and plantations, and enjoy some of the finest coffee on earth.

So, yes, I've become a snob, refusing now to consider drinking Folgers, Maxwell house, Starbucks or Seattle's Best in favor of my own brews. I even take my equipment with me on the road when I travel by car. There is no comparison and no substitute for really fine coffee, something that most people have never experienced.

Sorry, lost in the chatter, missed it. Yes, they're related, but I think of them somewhat differently. (I may be all wet, and totally off base. This is a personal answer, not an official one.)

I use peatiness to refer to that under note of what I think of as "bog" in the flavour. This varies from noticable (in, say, Oban), to dominant (in, for example, Lagavulin). When it's heavy, as it is in Lagavulin or Lamphroaig, it has an almost oilyness, and can be a bit much for some people. But with a touch of water, I find Lagavulin to be a perfect way to end an evening, sitting around the fire with friends, just gently sipping.

I use smokiness to refer to the "top" of that same characteristic. It's the nose, but also that front of the mouth taste.

Not sure that all makes sense, but hope it helps?

Political Science was always easy for me. I could read a book or article once and know what it was about. As long as I took notes so that I could easily recall what a specific article said during class I was good to go. Many of my classmates commented that they were reading the same thing 2-3 times, I never had to. Stats classes and Game Theory were a real time suck for me. They took hours upon hours to study for.

I was not working a real job when I was in grad school. I was a full time student who taught classes as a Grad Assistant. My part time jobs let me do a fair amount of class work, grading, and prep while supervising folks. Heck, I was doing a second job while at my part time job while spelling.

For the record, I was reading about 2,000 pages a week when I was taking classes. We did not have regular exams. We would have one final at the end of the semester that simulated the Comprehensive Exam experience or a final paper that was about 50 pages long.

I am no longer teaching but have thought about teaching at a Junior College.

I have done some public speaking out in the real world, and in my experience a person's reaction has more to do with them, then you. I am sure you did great, congrats! For many people , maybe even most, its a very had thing to do.
