To make it clearer (and also to verify I understood the current situation): jailbreak, like all jailbreaks and cracks in the world, used a "hole" in the standard coding, a flaw, however you want to call it, something that allow the developer to break in and gain "root access".
With this latest firmware, Amazon has closed that hole; therefore until someone finds a new hole, we're all screwed. Actually it isn't with this latest firmware, but with fw 5.4.something, right? |

The news here was so depressing about the prospect for a jailbreak that I returned my Kindle Voyage last week for a refund. Instead, I bought a Kobo Aura H2O. Let's you have pretty much unlimited freedom with fonts, line spacing and margins, and automatically gives you the book cover as your screensaver. Yes, I would prefer NiLuJe's screensaver and font hacks on a KV, but since that doesn't seem to be in the cards, this felt like my best option....it's too bad Amazon doesn't care. In any event, I'll keep my fingers crossed that someone gets lucky or has a burst of inspiration on the jailbreak front!

Probably a good choice -
to return it while you can rather than wait for inspiration to strike the folks working on a "closed" Kindle Jailbreak. (Closed: As in you don't have to open up the case.) |

I see, I just figured, if for whatever reason I decide to browse on an E-Ink book, I'd want the best experience. I will take a look at all the extensions, thanks. Quote:
Is this it? http://www.fabiszewski.net/kindle-browser/ Or is that only for the touch? The only other thread I found said I could install Debian and use netsurf, but I'm not that ambitious, and I'm not good enough with Linux. LibraryanSync - seems a little complicated, although I did learn a tiny bit of how to read JSON yesterday. Basically it would allow me to manage collections easier(through calibre and the likes), and do that thing that I wanted with the book titles as well? Screensavers - saw it, I have a magnetic cover, won't matter either way. Fonts - same boat as you, no interest in it. On another note, PW2 Front Light Master - Saw this and I am now messing around with it. |

skipstone works for the PWs as well, as far as I know. At least, it should definitely work for the PW1 which shares the same processor IIRC.
LibrarianSync is meant to deal with the tools which know much more about JSON than we do ![]() |

I still have trouble to understand the rescue pack (+coward pack) and usb networking. I installed USB Networking and the rescue pack, because it was recommended as a safety belt.
Do I have to set/toggle anything to be prepared IF something goes wrong or is everything just there if needed? |

Rescue Pack is toggled by placing a file called "ENABLE_DIAGS" (no extension, which is important because Windows often hides file extensions) in the Kindle userstore (usually Drive "E:\" on Windows).
Coward's Rescue Pack is toggled by plugging your Kindle into a USB charger and rebooting it. So, the Rescue pack is Just There If Needed. USB Networking can similarly be toggled manually via files, check the READMEs. tl;dr -- you can continue as you are, with perfect serenity. If anything happens, it is there to save you. |

It would be nice if you took time to setup and test SSH connection between Kindle & your PC. Also you should probably install backdoor lock, to block OTA updates. Maybe even after that keep WiFi off for couple of days until devs here can double check if those methods for blocking OTA still work.

Ok, that's what I wanted to know. Usually I am not a noob, but I got a bit confused and didn't want to be caught with my pants down! So thanks for clearing that up.
I tried the instructions to connect to the kindle via putty (from Windows), but get "connection refused". I can ping the kindle's ip, but putty won't connect me. (Backdoorlock ist installed!) Last edited by goldencore; 12-04-2014 at 06:01 PM. |

Basically, make sure you followed the guides for the IPv4 stuff, generate a public and private key using puttygen, toss the public key (save it as a file named authorized_keys) in usbnet/etc/, open putty, connect to "192.168.15.244," go to SSH->Auth, go to the bottom and find your private key using the file chooser, and then click open.

Not too big of a deal, but when I log into SSH, why do I always get "Server refused our key" and have to hit enter on the password prompt? Any fix for that?:
Code:
login as: root Welcome to Kindle! Server refused our key root@192.168.15.244's password: |

@Spartan117H3: That seems to be an issue on your side (that, or PuTTy being weird) [i.e., you're not in fact using shared keys to auth].
As for over WiFi, there's a config switch in the KUAL extension, but you *will* have to clear up your authentication issues first, because it will require a valid auth (unlike now where you can enter pretty much whatever you like as a password, or just hit enter). |
