Exactly. AND you get dirty looks, to boot!

I've found most folks have been extremely happy to discuss their reader when I've politely asked about their experience - one person in a restaurant was almost thrilled to be approached.

I am reporting back.

The deed is done. The last time he joined me over a lunch (I only started), he mentioned that he didn't see me for a long time. I was postponing the moment when I was about to finish the lunch, take out ebook reader and excuse myself from the conversation. He wanted to know what time I usually have the lunch, so he can come....that is when I snapped. I didn't want to give him any false hopes or expectations. I told him in a very polite way that I love my lunch breaks because I get away from the work and I want to read a book. To leave the RL matters behind for a short while.
I think(hope) he has understood...I don't know. I cannot say I don't care because I didn't want to upset him or damage our sort of a light version of friendship. Then again, I am very selfish and I actually don't care. I need my privacy. I am introvert. If he cannot get it, tough. Life is a bitch.

Anyone with any sense would understand. At the very first, the feelings might be hurt, but after thinking it over, they surely will know where you are coming from.

Again......if not......its their problem. You were polite, non confrontational, and thats all anyone can ask.

Sounds to me you handled it well. And there is nothing selfish about the way you handled it. Your time is just that: your time! That is a concept people in this overconnected world have lost.

I agree. Everyone needs some time just to themselves to unwind and relax. Especially in this over stressed world that we live in today.

I'm amazed how people seemed to be unable to amuse themselves anymore without being connected at the lip (sic) anymore. People are appalled when they learn I turn on my cell phone only when I'm going to use it, which is rarely (in fact, I often get chewed out for it). People do not understand when I do not answer my phone every time it rings because I may be busy with something else. They do not understand the concept that it's my time and I have the right to use it as I see fit.

Cooooooooooool!
I thoughts we are the only people who behave like that Not that we care. I and my better 2/3s are just like that. I think it is lucky that we are both the same, otherwise one of us would go mad, crazy, whatever...! Not picking up the phone at home is the most difficult concept for others to comprehend. My mobile phone is on 1/3-1/2 of the day at the most.
Friday and Saturday about 22.00 I simply disconnect land line until next day....13.00-15.00 depends on when I am ready. My mobile phone is off obviously.
My friends know that the easiest way to get me is via email

I absolutely agree. My teenage daughter is constantly on her cell phone! If she is texting at the table during dinner I would make her put her phone in her room. My phone is mainly used for business, but aside from that i rarely use it.

Well done for going through with it. It sounds like you made the right choice though, otherwise you'd have a regular lunch date lined up - every day!

There seems to be lots of us who don't answer the phone if we are busy, i don't either. One relative though, rings until the phone cuts off, then calls straight back, as many times as it takes me to eitheranswer, or switch my phone off. It is just attention seeking, as i have explained in no uncertain terms that i won't pick the phone up if it is not convinient for me, yet it continues.

I keep my cell phone on at all times because it is the only way to reach me. We didn't get a landline when we moved into the new apartment, and I rarely check email more than once a day or every two days. Since both of my children live away from home, one at college and one finishing senior year at old school, I need to be accessible. Especially since daughter is having leg troubles. Also, I am a temp worker and gt calls at all times of the day for work.

However, I might not answer calls from numbers I don't recognize.

As for people interrupting me as I read. I usually read at home, but do not mind a few interruptions if out in public somewhere. I'm pretty social, so talking to others doesn't bother me. Unless it is a creepy guy trying to come on to me, then he gets cut cold and infornmed I am happily married to a VERY protective man.

I have given the number for my iPhone to three people only. These are people whom I care about, and know that I don't like to 'shoot the breeze' if I am busy. My landline is always open, but if I am busy, I will put on the answering machine, muted.

If I am out and someone asks me if I am reading on a Kindle, I state a short sharp "Yes" and carry on reading if I don't want to be interrupted. If they keep on nattering way, I will say a loud "WHAT?" as if I am stone-deaf.

If people are rude enough to interrupt me when I am obviously busy, then I feel that I am entitled to be just as rude to them.

If I am not busy, that's a different story.

I use my Mp3 for when I'm doing housework; usually something humorous, beacause I hate housekeeping.
