I'm not a big curling fan (when someone asks if I saw the curling match on TV my response it normally that I was busy watching paint dry) but I'm constantly told that the sweeping takes a lot of physical effort. Especially when they used to use the old straw brooms and sweep rather then the new push brooms.

Personally I think it's because guys didn't know which end to hold a broom and they thought the women had too much of advantage. Either that or the little plaid skirts the women used to wear were too distracting.

Yea, I thought that too Harry. But, apparently the men can throw the "rock" which much more force if they need to take out other rocks, especially the "double" take-out.

However, I do agree I would love to see the Canadian women vs the men's team in a just for bragging rights game. (Oh and the Canadian women won silver when they lost their game to Sweden who captured their gold metal, they also won it last olympics).

speaking to the skiing events which I have some knowledge of... men are uniformly heavier and taller. these two aspects change the dynamics of a ski race ENORMOUSLY! the heavier body powers down the mountain MUCH more quickly than a lighter, smaller body.

there honestly are not very many events that men and women can compete on even ground in... any of the shooting events, but not the ones including cross country skiing, because, once again, the powerful body. other than shooting, the one event that is combined and can be competed at an equal level is the equestrian events

Skiing yes, that's obviously a case where men have a physical advantage. It just occurs to me that there's no particular reason for having separate mens' and womens' competitions in sports which don't depend on strength or body mass. And, as you say, equestrian events are combined, so why not shooting, or curling?

I don't understand why the shooting events are not combined. I shoot competitively a lot. modern firearms are seperate events, and older (muzzle loading types) are usually combined. I'm not going to pretend to understand curling to be able to answer why it's seperate. the reach maybe?

That would be awesome. But while I agree that curling skill on average is pretty even between the genders, I don't know that Bernard's team could beat Martin. Team Martin is stacked, and they've played brilliantly not just at the Olympics, but even prior. Plus Bernard's style for pulling a victory out at last minute would not mesh well against Team Martin's incredible defence.

Will there be a day when competition is mixed again?
Which reminded me of the Tour de France and other competitive cycling, and why recumbent cycles aren't allowed. Nothing to do with women, in this case, but still to do with snobbery and the status quo. Recumbents are more efficient, which allowed a "lesser" cyclist to beat the speed record - this was back in the 30s.

Canada won the mosst gold, US won the most over all. A great Games! And the hockey game was a nailbiter.

Here in the IceBox curling is frequently mixed gender. But then some of the Wisconsin women could tie me up like a pretzel without breathing hard.

Any one could!
