Yes, Jon, we do know his true position: DRM is required. If it weren't required, that is, if it were optional, Amazon's contracts would say something like "Amazon can provide DRM for your ebooks should you so choose. We discourage use of DRM, but will provide it if you want it." rather than making it mandatory, as the contract currently does.

Amazon does not DRM everything. Blogs are not DRMed but magazines and newspapers are (at least the ones I've tried). A few of my purchased books from Amazon came without DRM, not many but a few.

Thanks for your guidance here. I had already Googled my issue with the kindlepid.py and the first four pages came back to this forum!
I appreciate your responses and now, having read about the Amazon DMCA notice, understand. Bad news is - Amazon really doesn't get it - if I'm getting a legally usable copy from Library that I can read on up to 3 devices - they want to block using the Kindle. Obviously not protecting the copyright, but Amazon's revenue. Good news is - a community of people such as yourselves, who spend considerable time helping others - less frustration and we get more from our devices. THANKS! And to Amazon - I spend a lot at your site, much of it on electronics (my employees call me "Inspector Gadget"). I will be consciously moving my non-Kindle purchases to Barnes and Noble and brick and mortar stores - BestBuy here I come. |

I hope someone has a copy of the wiki info so it can be put back for when Amazon sees they are wrong and gives in.

In fact I might do that myself. It'd be quite fun actually, writing a short that is actually (when deciphered) the instructions to defeat their silliness. Must...find...cached...pages...of...wiki.... |

The wiki pages were not destroyed though they can no longer be viewed. They can be reactivated if and when the time comes.

Going a bit overboard

It should not be this hard to read a book one has legally purchased. Especially since there was no mention on the site that they were locked against Kindles. So let's not overstate the case about there being no need for a PID unless you're an evil moneygrubber. |

You need the Kindle PID for lending library MOBI ebooks, and perhaps for the few ebook stores that offer OverDrive MOBI ebooks. However, for the typical DRMed MOBI ebook what you need is a PID from any device that MobiPocket supports. Often this is a Windows PC, but if you are on a Mac or under Linux then a smartphone is another option. Use the PID to get your MOBI ebook downloaded with a PID inside and then use mobidedrm to strip the DRM. The resulting DRM-free ebook will be usable on your Kindle and also with 3rd-party ebook readers (such as FBReader). You are probably already aware of the potential legal pitfalls, but in the US stripping DRM for personal use of ebooks you bought may be legal (a fair use) and even if illegal the proscription is unenforceable.

I bought a Kindle knowing that the source for those e-books is Amazon, that doesn’t mean however I want to leave myself vulnerable to possible format changes in the future which would render my library of e-books obsolete. I view my e-books as I do a physical book, something I should have to buy once and be able to access indefinitely.
It may be technically illegal but I am storing the books I bought from Amazon for my own sole usage as both DRM free mobi files and DRM free e-pub files since it has been suggested on these boards that e-pub is a better long term storage option. I appreciate the work that has been done by Igorsk and the community in creating, testing and debugging the python script files that are available to anyone that knows how to do a simple online search. |

Does Kindle DX PID work the same way?
Anybody knows if either kindlepid.py or mobipocket 6.0 can show Kindle DX's PID?

dx pid
Thanks much, so I can get the DX with no worry of it being harder to deal with than a Kindle 2
I suppose I will have to try for myself to see if the PID gotten is also usable to deDRM an AZW I purchase so as to read it on the PC |
