It's very unreal to me now. We've (NC and the USA) got numbers (positivity rates, new infections, number hospitalized, etc.) steadily climbing, and reaching, levels not seen since the post Christmas holiday surge ... and yet we're sending unvaccinated children back to school, bringing students back to campus, reinstating mask mandates grudgingly city by city, and not requiring vaccination. What do people think is happening? Or going to happen? Or have people simply given up and are waiting to get sick, and get it over with?

At my local grocery stores, I'd say older shoppers and about 40% of younger or store employees still masked (MN). We are mostly not going out or using sidewalk pickup. We are downsizing, so need less 'stuff'. I've been Craigslisting since Spring and people have been pretty good about either masking up or keeping distance - everything outside, so that helps. Had to stop temporarily due to my Mom's foot injury. I've had a lot fewer people buying since the heat wave though.

UPDATE - Orange County is set to re-instate the mask requirement in all indoor public spaces tomorrow.

I go by people I know. My sister and her husband have had Covid twice. Yet they're both still unvaccinated and for the most part, just don't care. Aaand my sister is in the risk group. I've asked her more than once, why won't she get vaccinated. She has said that she might in the future, but for the most part, she's just indifferent. |

We have extended family living in Arizona, recently moved there from Chicago. This is my nephew and his wife, and 2 of their high school aged kids. His mother and her second husband are in the middle of a move out there as well.
Both of them are in the hospital, he with multiple other issues along with Covid, and if he makes it, will need full time care. (Most of this is not due to Covid) She is in another hospital in Chicago, in very poor shape. She is expected to make it, but will be on the mend for a long time. She is 71, he is 83. Neither were vaccinated. The nephew and his wife, and 2 of their 3 kids got Covid, none vaccinated. Her parents back in Chicago both have it, not vaccinated, and are doing poorly. It is so frustrating that educated people are so lead by what they read on social media. |

I'm not sure about my nieces, but my sister is certainly unvaccinated because of Facebook. She belongs to a few groups there and her opinions are strongly colored by them. They're not quite antivaxxers or conspiracy theorists, but often come close. |

My wife did not go to college but is a general reader, including serious biographies. This makes her much better educated than the average American college graduate. I’m pro-liberal arts education. And I’m pro-statistics education. I’m in semi-awe of the guy I know who went here. But number of years educated does not mean anything by itself. |

I have never gone to college. I got married at barely 18, college was never brought up as an option. But I don't consider myself uneducated.

You're probably not educated in a way that would land you a cushy white collar job.
But you are educated in a way that gives you a freaking clue. Given what I've seen in my retail job, I'm pretty sure that people with the first quite frequently don't have the second yet still end up running companies. |

Slightly offtopic, but what does someone with no college qualify to do at a law office?

Not precisely on topic, but related:
I was at the doctor's office today. No big deal, just checking on my progress with a new prescription, etc. While I was there -- since I am of a certain age and had chickenpox as a kid -- I got my first shingles vaccine. I'm overdue, but it was in short supply and the doctor finally got some in. Without exaggeration, the moment the needle entered my arm the doctor's cell phone rang. I immediately asked, "Are you sure that was the shingles vaccine, doc? I thought it was the COVID vaccine that was 5G-enabled." The doctor laughed. She knows me. |
