Sure it can. But so can the current crop of devices.
The problem is not the CPU, and the problem isn't even the screen.


The problem is the e-ink controller which is throttled to conserve battery power.
And the problem is that no one really wants to pack an ereader with RAM.



Oh, and my browser works fine, but then I am using the hacked one by @baf.

I would like to see a new (basic) Kindle, based on the hardware of the KPW3, that can't do anything except display books, with lots of options to change the rendering, and use dictionaries.

To be honest, I feel the e-reader is 'done' since the Paperwhite 1, and only incremental improvements to reading are possible. All other functions such as Goodreads, social networks, word builder, are all fluff.

Obviously you're not going to watch youtube on e-ink, but reading mainly text-based pages works fine. Making periodicals possible in anything other than mobi would be a good start. At least that means we could have Calibre hyphenate them for us -- as it is, unless you're using a Paperwhite old enough to run ixtab's hyphenation hack, we're still stuck with unhyphenated periodicals. This is doubly bizarre because hyphenation in the real world is considered essential for periodicals (in part because they are columnar, but also because a lot of periodicals use rather long words as these things go...). As it is, I'm planning to upgrade to the new Voyage when it comes out, but the loss of mobi hyphenation makes it almost a downgrade in some ways.

We are not remotely close to a 'done' e-reader yet.

Idon't know how it works in the US but here in Japan they had a similar deal in the first half of the year. If you cancelled the membership then you had to pay the difference.
