EPUB generated by ebook-convert does not open gracefully on windows
After converting an ebook from HTML to Mobi with Kindlegen, I then used ebook-convert to produce a EPUB file. This file opens with no problem in Calibre.
When I create an HTML file with a link to the EPUB file, windows asks if I want to open or save the file. Windows sees the file as type "Compressed (zipped) Folder. I have the file type "epub" associated with the Calibre program. It should just open directly in Calibre. Instead it looks like Windows thinks it's a zip file and wants to exract it for me. When I select open, I get the following message. Do you want to save this file? Type: epub_auto_file It then reports that the file can not be opened by the default program. It is either corrupted or it has an incorrect file type. Using 7za to list the contents of the epub file gives... >7za l test.epub 7-Zip (A) 4.65 Copyright (c) 1999-2009 Igor Pavlov 2009-02-03 Listing archive: test.epub Date Time Attr Size Compressed Name ------------------- ----- ------------ ------------ ------------------------ 2010-07-06 13:27:06 ..... 20 20 mimetype 2010-07-06 13:27:06 D.... 0 2 META-INF 2010-07-06 13:27:06 ..... 237 152 META-INF\container.xml 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 1098 508 Callias_-_Th-Fall_of_Athens _split_000.html 2010-07-06 13:27:06 ..... 4664 1052 Callias_-_Th-Fall_of_Athens _split_001.html 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 23213 8572 Callias_-_Th-Fall_of_Athens _split_002.html 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 10803 4439 Callias_-_Th-Fall_of_Athens _split_003.html _split_032.html 2010-07-06 13:27:06 ..... 4281 2006 Callias_-_Th-Fall_of_Athens _split_033.html 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 6805 1377 content.opf 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 51082 50931 cover.jpeg 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 2810 562 stylesheet1.css 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 758 397 titlepage.xhtml 2010-07-06 13:27:04 ..... 8014 1744 toc.ncx ------------------- ----- ------------ ------------ ------------------------ 615756 277747 41 files, 1 folders Any sugestions? |

You should be setting the ePub file to be opened by the Calibre-Viewer rather than the main Calibre program.

View a book, Now use the Viewer's File Open icon to open "your book" Does that work? I remember that I had problems with Calibre-Viewer with Windows file associations on an old .6.xx version. the problem went away somewhere around 6.4x |

The Calibre viewer program will open the book.
What I'm attempting to do is create and HTML link to the epub file. When using Internet Explorer (IE), I get the weird behavior. I think this is a setup issue of mine with IE. When I tried using Firefox, the file loaded with no problem with the epub reader plugin. Chrome also had no problem loading the the file from an HTML link. I think my problem is with IE and not Calibre. Thanks for the suggestions. They helped! |
