Seeing someone STOLEN from you by a disease is more than painful, it confuses the crap out of you, it angers you.
Your dad may not be what he was but he's in there somewhere. It's your job to call him outside to play.
Grandma died of alzheimer. It took eight years. On one of my last visits, as she saw me she went into a wild fit. As soon as I got out of the room they managed to calm her down. Someone told me she had always been scared of bearded men as it was when she was young. I hadn't realized that she barely tolerated that I was bearded before, on the threshold of her own fears. As ravages took more out of her, as she left the world more and more, I was allowed to visit. An empty shell...

I sympathize KK. Love him now...

I *hate* it when ESS (Eset Smart Security, AV and firewall) does something I've never seen before!!! Especially when it is to disable it's real time file system protection and firewall for the first 20-30 sec after boot up. Now I'm stuck with wondering if I have some kind of very clever virus/...ware or is it just the way it will work now...
At least the internet connection gets established after the module is running back again. Or it*looks* like it is afterwards.

Any ideas of how to check what the hell happens with the comp (win XP) in these first 30 sec? Some kind of logging program or something...

I have already planned scans from 2-3 online scanners and probably installing 1 or two free anti adware/spyrware programs, just to be sure.

*sigh* I can't contact my son. I had a brief message from him Monday, he was on a drop zone. couldn't tell me where.

KK, at the risk of sounding patronizing, at least it was not an abrupt end where you didn't have the opportunity for any closure. I agree, maybe this is a bit too long but we are here for you.

As has been suggested, enjoy what you can of him now!

no, I understand. I lost my Uncle that I was EXTREMELY close to, he was more like a brother, very suddenly. I still wrestle with that every day. I'm frustrated in that I had been trying to engage my parents in the "you need to move" dialogue for three years. and not being there is frustrating. as it is right now, I have to be in Tucson the 30th of July to go to Mexico to work on my FILs estate. travel back overnight and be in N.M. the 8th. I've offered to come down early but my sister feels she needs to orchestrate the show and is delaying me

I'm ok. don't worry, I'm very self reliant, pretty darn tough in fact. the Army couldn't break me, the bad guys didn't get me, it's all good!

I know you're self reliant and tough, KK.
I didn't mean to suggest otherwise.

It's just that even the toughest can start fraying around the edges.
And I know what it's like to hurt alone.
