What about Patricia C Wrede (her Enchanted Forest series is available as ebooks) or Tamora Pierce? I read both of these authors as a young teenager (and still like them today).

Another option is Mercedes Lackey - some may suit a slightly older child, but some would be OK, especially the 500 kingdoms stories and elemental masters stories (both of which are based around fairy tales, but with strong characters - no wimpy girly girls!) |

When I was 9-10 I loved Victor Kelleher books. His YA (as opposed to the later children's work) was a bit dark, a bit creepy, but not horrible. The two I reread in the last few years were Taronga (post-apocalyptic, centred around Sydney and its Taronga Zoo) and Papio (about a boy in Africa who makes friends with a captive gorilla, sets him free, then has to deal with the fallout). I think I liked the realism - gritty but not overboard.

Looks as though his stuff isn't available in ebook form yet. On the bright side, it IS available on Amazon - I wasn't sure that'd be the case, given he's an Aussie author. |

the hand off happened on Saturday. she seem to be very excited to be in charge of a Kindle for a month. I'll see her Mom on Wednesday and find out how the first few days have gone. I'd like to see this thread continue to not only re-introduce people to old forgotten favorites, but show off new beloved reads! also as e-reading becomes more commonplace, getting good stuff available for the kiddos is important! |

Another book I loved as a kid was Playing Beatie Bow. A girl goes back in time a century, in The Rocks area of Sydney. Again, doesn't seem to be available in ebook format BUT Callie (same author, similar vintage) is. Quote:

Oh true, she needs another bookshelf! The thing is, Kelly has a language disability. The fact she reads and reads alot is simply wonderful beyond words. Her mum and I are so proud of her! Also, were CS Lewis's Narnia books mentioned earlier? Last edited by sabredog; 07-06-2010 at 07:25 PM. |
