Isn't the term "young adult" in this sort of context just an easy way to allow adults to rationalise reading kids books?

I will agree 100%, half the time I didn't even know what was going on! I got to the end and thought, what just happened?! I grew up reading her books too (I'm 24) and I don't think it's age...I just don't think it was written as well as the others! The ones with an * are part of a series: Christopher Pike- The Last Vampire* Neil Gaimen- The Graveyard Book Maggie Steifvater- Shiver ![]() Suzanne Collins-The Hungar Games, with sequel Catching Fire Gena Showlater- Intertwined Gillian Sheild- Immortal Claudia Gray-Evernight, with Stargazer (Hourglass will release in March 2010) Alyson Noel- The Immortals* Um.... those are all I can think of right now that haven't already been mentioned. All of the really good ones were already taken lol! I infinitely love Richelle Mead, Stephenie Meyer, Cassandra Clare, Libba Bray, Holly Black. Some of these are not in ebook form, not all are romances, but I have to say Maggie Steifvater's reeeaaaallly good! Well, in my opinion |

I'm bumping this as I am loaning one of my Kindles to a friend who has a very precocious 9 year old, whi apparently an extremely voracious reader. she has burned through all the Potter books, Narnia, Lemony Snickets, and so on. I don't want to spend a ton of money as this is just a loan to see if she likes the Kindle, and until I have grandkittens, I don't feel the need to pay out for a bunch of kids books (not that I don't have some already!)
(and for the record, the Kim Harrison books, while loads of fun are so not for the under 18 crowd! |

What about Michael Scott's "The Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel" series?
He marks it as "Young Adult" and there are currently four books: The Alchemyst The Magician The Sorceress The Necromancer ... with two more coming. While not vampires, they are books about two teenagers learning they are powerful magic-workers - and their trials and tribulations concerning their powers. The tales are set in today's modern world and the teenagers travel all over the globe. Very enjoyable books, so far. Marilyn |

Hmmm. Book series like Twilight? A little over a year year ago I asked the same question in another forum and have since read many books in this same family of fiction. (i.e., vampires, creatures, werewolves, etc) So... I jumped on this thread hoping to discover more books to read... "without considering" the target audience of Twilight is the young adult (i.e., novels that "wouldn't be" considered young teen appropriate.)
After reading this entire thread I believe it would be safe to state the clarification of what is "appropriate" for young readers has been clearly identified and many if not all of the really good books for the young teen reader have already been mentioned (including but not limited to): > The Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead > Blue Bloods by Melissa De La Cruz > Vampire Diaries by L. J. Smith > Mortal Instruments trilogy by Cassandra Clare > His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman That said, what about us adults that have read and enjoyed Twilight... but want more? A few of the adult oriented titles have already been mentioned: (e.g. Sookie Stackhouse)... but I thought I would expand on the adult selection. If you are an adult and enjoy reading this genre of novels and not offended by adult dialog, sexual innuendos or the occasional sex scene... then read on as these are pretty entertaining: > The Brotherhood of Blood series by Kathryn Smith - (5 novels) I am called Chapel . . . For nearly six centuries I have roamed the night, a mortal man no longer. Would that I could undo the past -- when I entered the sanctuary of the Knights Templar to wrest from them the Holy Grail, only to discover the chalice I raised to my lips was not the sacred relic but a hellish cup of damnation. Now I shun the day and all things human, driven by an ungodly thirst. And yet... > Anita Blake, Vampire Hunter novels by Laurell K Hamilton - ( 18 novels) Trust is a luxury Anita can't afford when her allies aren't human. The city's most powerful vampire, Nikolaos, is 1,000 years old and looks like a 10-year-old girl. The second most powerful vampire, Jean-Claude, is interested in more than just Anita's professional talents, but the feisty necromancer isn't playing along--yet. This popular series has a wild energy and humor, and some very appealing characters--both dead and alive. > Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon Being trapped in a bedroom with a woman is a grand thing. Being trapped in hundreds of bedrooms over two thousand years isn't. And being cursed into a book as a love-slave for eternity can ruin even a Spartan warrior's day. As a love-slave, I knew everything about women. How to touch them, how to savor them, and most of all how to pleasure them. But when I was summoned to fulfill Grace Alexander's sexual fantasies, I found the first woman in history who saw me as a man with a tormented past. She, alone, bothered to take me out of the bedroom and into the world. She taught me to love again. But I was not born to know love. I was cursed to walk eternity alone. > The Sookie Stackhouse / True Blood) series by Charlaine Harris - (10 novels) Sookie Stackhouse is just a small-time cocktail waitress in small-town Louisiana. Until the vampire of her dreams walks into her life-and one of her coworkers checks out... Maybe having a vampire for a boyfriend isn't such a bright idea. That said... my personal favorite (and highly recommended) is the Black Dagger Brotherhood series: > The Black Dagger Brotherhood novels by J.R.Ward - ( 8 novels) In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there's a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Yet none of them relishes killing more than Wrath, the leader of The Black Dagger Brotherhood. The only purebred vampire left on earth, Wrath has a score to settle with the slayers who murdered his parents centuries ago. But, when one of his most trusted fighters is killed-leaving his half-breed daughter unaware of his existence or her fate-Wrath must usher her into the world of the undead-a world of sensuality beyond her wildest dreams. If you have already read Black Dagger Brotherhood and enjoyed it then my next recommendation would easily be: > The Midnight Breed series by Lara Adrian - ( 7 novels ) Lucan watches her from across the crowded dance club, a sensual black-haired stranger. But nothing about this night—or this man—is what it seems. For when Gabrielle witnesses a murder outside the club, reality shifts into something dark and deadly. In that shattering instant she is thrust into a realm she never knew existed—a realm where vampires stalk the shadows and a blood war is set to ignite. A vampire himself, Lucan is a Breed warrior, sworn to protect his kind—and the unwitting humans existing alongside them. Lucan cannot risk binding himself to a mortal woman, but when Gabrielle is targeted by his enemies, he has no choice but to bring her into the dark underworld he commands. If you aren't ready to take on a series of 5 to 18 novels... but don't mind an occasional slip into the fantasy world of vampires any enjoy books with the humorist twist... then check out Death by the Drop. Don't look for the dark, brooding characters commonly found in many popular vampire novels. This book is filled with fun-loving characters, who appreciate a good joke or prank as much as any human. > Death By The Drop by Timothy Massie John Steele has a second chance at life... though in his case this second chance means becoming one of the undead - a vampire. John's adventure begins in New Orleans, but before he gets an opportunity to experience his new existence to the fullest, he's almost done in by one of his own kind. Determined to take advantage of his second chance, John sets out to be everything he wasn't as a human. Things quickly become chaotic, thanks to a top secret FBI unit, a misguided group of Templars, and a great-grandfather who not only helps save the night, but also knows how to throw a heck of a party! (NOTE: The number of novels listed for each series is subject to change as new books in the series are released) |

This might be silly, but how about The Wizard of Oz novels? I think they are available as e-books..
The Soul screamer series by Rachel Vincent is pretty good. There is a free short story prequel available. Holly Lisle have two YA novels out, the Ruby Key and the Silver door. No idea if they are available as e-books, though. I have read good things about the Vlad series ( cannot remember the author) |

I'll check the screamer. I know I've read some Holly Lisle (can't remember what), but as I recall it was good! |
