In Norfolk, VA, there is an area known as Willoughby Spit that was formed years ago by a hurricane. Every time someone mentions it, I think, "Where do they suppose honey comes from?"

Steam locomotives rock! They're so much more aesthetically pleasing than diesels! (But so much more polluting because of the coal used to produce the steam!)
I wish more were still around, and I wish cabooses would make a comeback. Somehow the red light on the last car that replaced them doesn't seem very trainish. As soon as I win the lottery, I'll build the world's bestest ever model railroad to go in my new mansion. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 06-27-2010 at 09:49 AM. |

My home town had railroad tracks that divided it into halves. There were two regular freight trains that went through every day - used to love to hear the night train whistle!

![]() Lightly dozing, cradled in the cabin that gently sways, the travelers gaze into their hopes and dreams inside their minds. The wishful thinking, of which they see a different day that be, arises from the well of sleep. The track does creep along the winding way to that of which they say is where that they would choose to be. A drifting unwinding, over the rails of which they are gliding, transports the thoughts away from the rushing, racing place of which was left behind. Footsteps are heard without a word. Then an explode, of gentle voice upon the calm and cloudy, to awake. "Willoughbeeey, next stop Willoughbeeey." The train has stopped upon a station. This not of imagination, but of place and time as you will find. "Willoughbeeey, we are now at Willoughbeeey." The wishful wanderlings in awe do see a place of which they long to be. Without hesitation the chicken flies first, with an excited burst, from the train. Others do see such a bright happy glee and follow with an exuberant step. The gray dog jumps with a dynamic leap.. from the rails to that place, wishfully happy and sweet. The rest do seem as if in a stream. The flow, of which seeps from the car, is like a shooting star. The type of which wishes are granted from, like a silver flame in song. "Willoughbeeey, last stop Willoughbeeey!!" Willoughby, of Sunlight and serenity be. What is it here that you do see? ![]() |

true train story... I was white water rafting with my Explorer Post in my teens, something we did quite a bit. we would usually go on 3-5 day excursions, and some of the older members were professional guides (something I did later on, but that is another story). we were coming through a canyon that was running higher and faster than usual and all of the normal pullouts were covered with water. we had to keep going well past nightfall. when we finally pulled out everyone was completely exhausted. no tents were set up, no fires were made, we just munched on trail mix, pulled out our sleeping bags and crashed. along about o'dark thirty the demons from hell were upon us! we had pulled out right next to where the railroad tracks were very close to the river and the freight train was going through. we all ended up with spark burns on our sleeping bags and galloping adrenaline!

KK, that must have been quite an exciting surprise! Better than waking up from a buzzing alarm clock.

Twice, we crossed Western Europe by train, we've been on almost all regional train companies in Switzerland (I believe there are 2 we've not been on, yet) and even our honeymoon was a train ride (on the slowest intercity in Europe). |
