No Micropay anymore at Fictionwise

I've worked my Micropay balance down to under $80 and at the rate I'm using it up it should be gone by Fall. I didn't discover Fictionwise until a few years ago but I'd been buying from eReader for many years before. I still have a balance over at eReader so I'll have to see about using that up, too.

Nowadays, I purchase very little since the Agency cartel has decided to kill the ebook market. My wishlist is huge but I will not purchase when I can walk into a bricks and mortar bookstore and purchase the physical version for less even with sales tax. Especially since on many of the ebooks the price has not been reduced once the MMPB is released. Why pay $12.99 for an ebook when I can walk in and buy it for $3.86 as a MMPB?

Fictionwise was doing okay until the Agency Five agreement but this will kill it.

How about the Ethshar books by Lawrence Watt-Evans? Or, indeed, any of his books. Most of them are in Multiformat at Fictionwise.

Hmm... there are still large transaction rebates. So you should be able to spend $200 in micropay and get back $30 to spend on more books, which added to the remaining balance should let you spend over $100 and get back $10, which would be another boook.

I have $3.19 left in Micropay and one $10 coupon, but I can't find anything I want at the moment.

I've already re-downloaded all my multiformat books in ePub format. Perhaps I ought to also check that I do have copies of all the DRMed ebooks too.

It certainly looks like fictionwise isn't long for this world.

Let me rephrase that — at a price I'm willing to pay and in a format I like.

They no longer sell Mobipocket format. Epub will do.

Looking at my wish list, one book I'd like is Elizabeth Moon's "Oath of Fealty". They sell it in epub format. For $25.46 (to club members).

Amazon sell it for $7.21, and that's including 17.5% VAT.
W H Smith sell it for £6.55
Waterstones sell it for £6.39 (Grr. They sell the paperback for £5.59. OK, taking VAT into account that's more expensive (£6.57) but they include free shipping with the paperback.)

Well, when I buy it, it looks like Amazon gets my business...

Yup, my last $0.20 went automatically yesterday against the George Zebrowski book I bought. It was nice to see something without geographic restrictions that I actually wanted.

Au revoir Fictionwise, you were far and away my favourite site before the geographic restrictions, agency pricing and dropped magazine subscriptions bit me.

The UK ebook sellers really, really need to get their acts together.

FW could have mentioned this "little change" in their emails .... I don't have much in the kitty these days, and I am sure that if it wasn't for this thread some of us wouldn't have realised it was happening; although they say the balance is safe.....(fer now )

It will be a shame if Fictionwise goes. The multiformat books are great. It's much easier having one account there than separate ones at all the little publishers who sell their books there.

I'm going to really be disappointed if I lose the only place I can subscribe to Interzone and Analog in PDF (large format is cool!).

I have 31 dollars left. I will probably use that up on Rex Stout books if they keep coming out weekly. Once that is gone I will start working on my $50 giftcard at B&N but looks like my days as a Fictionwise customer are coming to a close. That is sad since I have shopped there nearly 10 years.

Already gone. You can't buy new magazine subscriptions, only the individual issues. Existing subscriptions are supposed to keep going until they run out.

I am very sad to see this. I bought most of my ebooks there when they had huge sales. But without micropay and their higher prices I cannot see myself using them much anymore. I sure am glad New Hampshire Libraries have ebooks (epub) now. And since my husband works in Mass, I have access to the Boston Public Library ebook collection as well.... so I guess I will be buying fewer ebooks anyway.

This is so depressing. Fictionwise was my go-to store for such a long time. Without Micro-pay, I just don't see the point of shopping there anymore.

Does anyone know if they'll refund a buyerwise membership? I have about two years left, but I wondered since I've already used the coupons from the membership and the micro-pay discount if they'll refund it....

I'm prepared for what I believe to be the inevitable and have re-downloaded my entire 200+ books in ePub (that horrible file format), in mobi format, and in the wonderful (but abandoned) LRF file format. This way, I have both of my two major ebookieuses [ - ebook Readers] covered.
