I'm currently about a 100 or so pages into the stand-alone fantasy Best Served Cold by Joe Abercrombie, he of the terrific The First Law trilogy.

I was thinking of reading Mistborn (Brandon Sanderson) first, since I only recently finished TFL, but I love Abercrombie's writing and his characters, and decided to continue with him. I think I might be developing a man-crush on the guy...

I just started reading "The Deed of Paksenarrion", which is on the poll for this months book club read, and it's great so far! I think I'll be reading several of the books on the poll this month.

Just finished The lost city of Z by David Grann. Grann has made extensive research on the life of Colonel Percival Harrison Fawcett who disappeared under unknown circumstances in 1925 during an expedition to find what he believed to be an ancient lost city in the Amazon rain forest.

I had heard very little of this man or about the Royal Geographic society before I read this book. What a fascinating read to be able to follow these men and there hardships as they went out exploring uncharted jungle territory. Truly tough explorers who persevered despite very little of today's modern equipment.

I just saw your post in the What are you Listening to Right Now thread, but before I could post my smart-alec reply ("Did you find the book on YouTube?"), it had already been moved.

Just kidding, of course. Don't feel bad; you're not the first to post a reply to the wrong thread. I've done it myself once or twice; it's not difficult to do when you're surfing around various forums.

Seriously, though, I am "reading" one book currently on TouTube. The Longfellow translation of Dante's Divine Comedy. The readers are all volunteers, so the quality varies from Canto to Canto, but overall they've done a fine job. The book begins here; if anyone's interested. So far I've finished the Inferno, and am currently in Purgatory.

I had been reading two other translations of the Commedia concurrently, but they are both on the back burner for the moment as I concentrate on finishing up some other books I've started first. I will return to them.

yeah noticed I posted to the wrong thread so I posted it here instead as to not confuse any music lovers...

Seriously though if you're into non fiction books this is a fascinating read. I find that I'm more and more drawn to non-fiction books as the years go by.
In my youth I found these kind of books boring so I'm glad my view has changed.

It looks like a fascinating book, as I've always been fascinated by lost civilizations in that region. I'm not surprised that Percival Harrison Fawcett disappeared under unknown circumstances in the Amazon rain forest, however. It can be a treacherous place filled with wild animals, terrestrial dangers, suspicious natives, and disease. It's a jungle out there!

Does the Royal Geographic Society have ties with National Geographic magazine?

As far as I know they don't. National Geographic are based in Washington, D.C and RGS is based in the U.K.

Interesting that Val McDermid is one of your oldest pals, Neil - one of my friends is also friends with her and always says how lovely she is. I must admit I haven't read any of her books, though.

I have just finished Flann O'Brien's The Third Policeman. I hadn't read it before and thought it was brilliant. I'm half way through Vicki Tyley's Thin Blood. She's an Indie author and her book is a thriller. I'm enjoying it.

You should check out The Kestral Voyages too... I think it starts with Berserker. then also Verdant Skies they are very good reads... if a bit on the male chauvinistic side.

Interesting I have read 3 by him and never the ones you listed.
