If not Duncton Wood (or maybe one of the sequels?), something from Brian Jacques' Redwall series maybe?

There may be less "romance" and more of that relationship being the pivot. This description might be better:

It is one series I know most often compared to Watership Down.

Cheers,

That description is much better and is, in fact, the book I'm looking for. Didn't know there was a whole series. Thanks! Karma to you, if I can.

I read a sci-fi/horror type book about 20 years ago, I think, where the earth had started fighting back against man -- roads wouldn't stay paved, etc. The one clear thing I remember was someone becoming encased in a tree. Anybody remember that?

It was a big collection of works produced by a college I believe. It was published on this site a few years ago, it was a big deal at the time. I could have sworn it was Oxford, but I can't remember the name of the collection for the life of me.

More help please

Having hit gold before here I would really appreciate more help please!

Its Sci Fi
About a space pilot that had modifications that gave him better vision, fangs claws etc, at one point he fights big green animal, his body shuts down after he uses up too much energy

There was a sequel where he rescues some children who live in underground tunnels and wear dark glasses

Any ideas?

Thanks

Yeah, I know that feeling: the answer's in your head, but you can't find it. Frustrating. Always look behind the lounge first - it's probably not there, but usually a bit of coin turns up.

You'll find the Harvard Classics are in the MobileRead upload section, thanks to some tedious work by our Good Master RWood (where is he, by the way?). Just search for titles by Charles W. Eliot who was the editor of Harvard Classics.

Haven't read it but the description has always intrigued me - this sounds like Steven R. Boyett's "Ariel: The Book of Change"? Yes?

No, there was no magic/fantasy involved. It was more horror/sci-fi. It was just plain scary.
