Just went strawberry picking. We had the time to pick about a handful of fruit before an enourmous thunderstorm started. Bf ran to the car but I just figured I'd be soaking wet whatever I chose, so I stayed in the rain and picked fours liters of jewels. I'm very proud - but very wet.

The actual rant is this: by the time I got to the car, the rain *stopped*! Is the Raingod against me picking fruits?

Now of to make jam!

Verencat, you are living proof that Murphy's Law exists.
Or you are actually dating Murphy....

I like strawberry jam. I get mine from a local monastery.

Looks at boyfriend suspiciously

Monastery products are always so good, and it's great to help a community... I always thought I could very much appreciate monastic life.

I wonder if one is allowed to be a modern monk. I could enjoy a life of solitude -- but I'd really like to have my modern toys and gadgets (computer, Kindle, iPhone4, etc....) And having virtual friends! Well, okay - all of you are actually real, but since we'll probably never meet the friendships are ethereal, if not virtual.

Some of the monks tease me.
They say I'm an order of one.
They call me Brother Only.

Well, that's better, by an order of a hundred (math & physics sense of "order of") than being in a large crowd. Ychh! says this introvert.

Although, one can be totally alone in a crowd, too. It's just parties where I'm supposed to know everyone, that are really awful.

there's a place in NEw MExico where lay people can live the monastic life for set periods of time... week/s, month/s, year/s. some even join the order without going through the whole priestly dealio.

there's a convent on one of the San Juan Islands that raises sheep, makes goat cheese, spins the wool and so on. I've often thought it would be a wonderful place to go defuse. but the foundations would probably crack when I stepped foot inside

I suppose I could get a small taste of the experience by renting a cabin for a week (in a secluded state park somewhere) and just being by myself. Taking my toys with me, of course.

Us moderns are really not used to being alone with our thoughts. We have music on cue (unheard of a century ago), other people on cue (talk radio, etc). All so we don't have to rattle around alone, in our own heads.

And that, my friend is 3/4 of the cause of problems in the world today.

and the other 3/4 is overpopulation.

RANTING

Here is my rant. Really two rants. Hubby took our son, 26, to the hospital emergency room as he was really sick, we thought it was from his migraine. The put him in ICU, it seems that he has diabetes type 1. They kept him there for three days in ICU, then sent him to another room for two more days making sure his insulin levels were stable, getting the right dosage he needed. Social workers, diabetes counselors, and dietitans came and talked to him and us about what needed to be done. Unfortunately, the hopsital is not in our home state (there is no local hospital) so we can't go to those agencies in that state for help.

The first rant aspect, I called Human services to see what help we could get for his meds -- he has no insurance. What do they tell me? Naturally, we have to come in and fill out some forms, get some papers from the doctors and then apply; it will probably take at least six months. SIX MONTHS! I told her he would be dead by then, he has to have his insulin NOW. Their response, "I'm sorry, but that is all we can do, bring us the information we need and we will send in the application for a medical card". I asked them, don't they know of any places where we can get his insulin while we wait to hear about a medical card? "No, sorry, call his doctor and see if they can help you".

The compassion, the caring, the empathy, does it exist within social service? Of course not, the ones who are supposed to care don't give a DAMN. They don't even have the decency to have a list of places I can contact.

The ones who are helping out? The hospital has give us a two week supply of insulin for him. I called the doctor's office for an appointment and they told us that the pharmacitual companies give them insulin for those who can't afford it. They told us to contact these companies to request assistance for free or discounted medication. Meanwhile, they can provide some insulin week at a time for him as we look for some help.

We will have to pay for the test strips, the syringes, alcohol pads and lancets. That will be at least a $100 a month. The insulin is going to be at least $400 a month.

As for my son getting a job to help with expenses, he was looking for one but here is rant two. Wonderful WalMart gave him the wrong meds and now he is suffering neurological problems; he is not allowed to drive a car, has to use a cane to walk and other side effects from not getting the right medication. It wasn't what he was given so much as not getting the right medication. He had a severe withdrawl that the neurologist said caused damage, it will over time heal, but never totally. He was looking for a part time job to help with college expenses, he was taking premed classes. He has been tested three times on IQ tests, two times over 130 and one time over 145.

His life is ruined, he was planning on become a psychiarist; he was able to read a book and retain most of it. Not photographic, just GREAT memory. I was doing (struggling with) my algbra homework (I am in college) and he looked at the problems, examples and even though he had never taken an algreba class, he was telling me what to do, and he was right on everyone of them. We were told when he was being tested on his IQ that if he wanted he could go to NASA, he had a unique way of seeing things that would be great in the science and research field. All of that has been taken from him, first by Walmart and now the diabetes.

Okay, rant is over, sometimes it is overwhelming and I just need to vent.

Janette
Here in WI, we can help the patient apply for emergency Medicaid, which from the sound of it, he would be eligible. I know that the social workers have helped folks from MN, which is just across the river. You might ask the social work department at the hospital if they have that capacity.

I hope your son has a good recovery. If the neurologist said that it could reverse for the most part, that is a good thing.

it is extremely quiet here on my farm. I can hear the birds chirping, the squirrels swearing, the horses moving around, the wind in the trees and so on. I find that quite often when I am alone (which is mostly) I don't have music or TV on. in fact there are times when I am tempted to unplug the fridge as it is intrusive. on the other hand, when I am traveling, or for instance when I was in CA, I had something going almost all the time. I couldn't bear to listen to noise generated by others

My aunt had a house in New Hampshire I used to spend summers at when I was a kid. The quiet was wonderful. No radio or TV at all. My favorite memory is seeing the world by moonlight for the first time. I miss that.
