Also for your information the Sony predecessors (the clie and other) to their first official e-book reader (with e-ink) were likely out before your references in any case. Palm devices and pds etc. etc.

Zelda I'm beginning to take exception to you behaving the way you do as a moderator. Don't threaten me. I have every right to participate in this discussion as you. I have every right to object to using a MADE UP word for a device that has a perfectly good name.

If you would like to use the word in your French Forum, be my guest, but when you post in English and insist on using a made-up word for an e-book reader I AM INSULTED. kenny, I'm sorry if you take exception to being reminded of our guidelines, but they are there for *everyone* and pointing them out when necessary does not constitute a threat and is in fact part of my job as a moderator.

As for being offended by my using the word "liseuse", I did not start this thread, nor have I ever attempted in any way to force the use of the word on anyone else. It is certainly not a "made up" word in any way, although that seems a curious reason for you to feel insulted by it. Regardless, as a french speaker, I can assure you that there is nothing derogatory nor insulting about the word.

As I have said several times already : please feel free to use whatever word you choose, but please also respect the choices of other members even when they differ from yours. Don't hesitate to use the ignore feature of the forum whenever necessary, if you are annoyed by the posts or the vocabulary of any person in particular. I would also like to point out the "ignore thread" feature which you'll find in the thread tools menu at the top of the page, it might save you a bit of irritation to ignore this thread.

And more to the point, this freaking thread is all about discussing the chance of the word being used outside of Mobileread.

So why is it wrong to argue over those odds? That's the whole point of the thread--whether it can or should catch on. Some posts earlier were delving into personal attacks, and the warnings were warranted there. But I don't see any in the discussion you were having with Kenny just now.

Also, most other sites have a policy of moderators not being able to act when they're in the discussion as it's kind of crappy for a member to be having a debate with a moderator and have them threaten them with action when the debate gets a little heated. The policy is for another moderator to intervene if needed. Now if he'd directly insulted you etc., then it's fine as that's a black and white rule violation. But for a heated debate that I personally see no forum rule violations--comes off as taking advantage of the position to me.

I'm quite aware of the features of this and other forums. I'm also quite aware of my rights and know when they are being attacked and when I am being insulted. Please re-read and think before you post. Being a moderator is a privilege and carries with it certain standards of behavior and actions.

I have not done anything wrong by objecting to the use of your made up word (be clear! There is no ENGLISH word like this). As I said, if you choose to use it in the French forum feel free. I don't visit there anyway. If you choose to use it in an ENGLISH forum, I have every right to object to it or point out how silly it is.

Saying that "no made up words should be used in English", when English itself, as any other language, is made up by them (is the word "ebook" some kind of godly concept which was there before men appeared in the Earth?), and precisely when English contains a lot of words of French origin, if not French words themselves, is a moot point IMO.

Insulting people is over the line for sure. But again, the whole point of this thread (as indicated by the "?" in the title is to debate the chances of the term catching on.

Saying it's a silly term from the perspective of English speakers is a valid reason for one to argue why it won't catch on. That's calling the term silly. Now if he's going around saying the people using it are silly, then fine you can say that's a personal attack I suppose. But I didn't see much of that from him.

It just seems the modding is pretty un-even on this site. There were much more blatant personal attacks that went barely dealt with in the Apple forum for quite a while. Apparently some action was finally taken, though I was shocked no one was banned for it. Guess I shouldn't be as I didn't even get ban when I asked for my account to be banned after getting a deserved suspension for insulting someone!

In short, the mods on this site need to gain some consistency and grow a pair and actually ban some people as the level of discourse on this site frankly stinks at times. Part of it's just the international make up I think, as I've never found a hugely international forum site that worked out well. Anyone know of a good American centered e-readrer forum site?
