just for the record, although it is surprising in light of the relative ignorance of the general french public with regards to ebooks, they actually have a long history here.
- Bookeen, a french company founded in Paris, one of the pioneers of the ebook hardware companies, has been making liseuses since 2003, and was founded by original members of
- Cytale, creator of the Cybook, founded in Paris in 1998, who were making liseuses back in 1998.
- Mobipocket is a french company, founded in Paris in 2000.
- Feedbooks is more recent but arguably unique, and is also french.
I don't know whether any of these were "first" but definitely among the first and certainly proof of a significant history here.

I'm thinking Sony may have been the first so why not a Japanese word?

Here's the wikipedia timeline which is interesting and indicated that Sony was the first:

2006: Sony presents the Sony Reader with e-ink.

Most likely on an Etch-a-Sketch - or thinking about it, maybe I could use the scribble facility on my IREX DR800 liseuse.

Who in their right mind would want to use a nasty Japanese word when there's a perfectly good French word that the whole world already uses?

What matters in introduction in the mainstream. Parkour isn't mainstream, but it's been introduced everywhere with the same term so it's stuck. But it might would change if it became a competitive sport and became more mainstream. Who knows.

E-readers aren't mainstream and have been introduced with various terms--and in America it's mainly be introduced as a brand name. People see e-readers of whatever brand here and often ask "Is that a Kindle (or iPad lately!)" much like they ask for a "Kleenex" when needing a tissue!

Again, I have no problem with people playing their game on here and trying to use the term. But it will never catch on in the mainstream--especially in English speaking areas. Remember the "freedom" fries thing in the US. There's a ton of anti-French resentment in the US, the UK etc. so on top of being a foreign word, the fact that it's French will hurt it's adoption with many.
