Can you pronounce that? I'd love to hear what it sounds like, because adoption is at least in part a phonetic process as well as a visual and symbolic one.

Quite right, and your first comment on the thread - post #7 - was:

Quote:
I loath this word personally. Unless you're French, I can see no conceivable reason for wanting to use it. Let's hope that it dies the death that it so richly deserves.
Whatever the OP's intention, a few posts in we had moved away from the empirical question of whether the word liseuse was being used outside MR to the question of whether it should be used and individual preferences or otherwise for the word. The argument seems to proceed along the lines that, since I dislike the word, it has no chance of passing into common currency.

There seems to be no way of predicting which words will gain currency and which won't - who would have thought "USB" or "Broadband" would have gained currency?

Sounds something like chitatel(v) - the v in the end is barely heard, it seems.
It is easy to find how a russian word is pronounced if you just look at the alphabet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russian_alphabet.

You're talking to someone who is functionally illiterate when it comes to understanding other languages. Also, my French teacher threw a chair at me becuase I never listened. Also, I was late for my French oral exam by three hours. Also....you don't need to know the rest, although it does involve a flick knife (my brother gave to me, and also French) the French teacher's convertible car and a particularly rainy day in my youth

But thanks anyhow.

I went to a Catholic school at the very end of corporal punishment in the UK. We still had the cane, the leather strap, and monks who threw chairs at you

Those were the days, eh?
I'm sure they produced very devout catholics...

It's pronounced "chit-a-tell". I think it's rather a nice word!

EDIT: Sorry - I see that omk3 has already answered you.

Fraid not. We had it up to 1989 at the very least (no matter what the law says, because I got my last 'strap' in that year.) And Catholic school produces two things; lots of sex and atheists

It's right I'm afraid - and since then they have had to devise a whole new range of cruel and inhuman punishments.

One of the ones they gave to me was making me stand on my tiptoes (stockinged feet) with my nose pressed up against the wall for ages. The only thing is that they did this to me after one of the operations on my leg and I came home bleeding where the stitches had ruptured. Ahh Catholic school. The fondest of memories

Still a nice word though. I wouldn't mind that one either, or alongside Liseuse, although I still think Liseuse is a bit more sexy.

I must say I'm shocked.
...

I thankfully never encountered anything of the sort in Greece. Not even close. Standing in the corner for a while was the worst that ever happened (not on tiptoes), and we usually had fun making faces at the rest of the class. People a little older than me had to endure some slapping, regretfully.

Yes chitatel sounds good too. And I'm still looking for a word in greek. There is the very very informal "diavastiri" (διαβαστήρι), which is fun, but I can't see Sony advertising their new "diavastiri" to be honest (if they ever decide to sell to Greece, that is). They'll stay with ebook reader or some awkward formal greek translation as usually happens in the world of modern technology.
