I'm going to start calling it a читатель personally. It's clearly the most appropriate name!

Well, I reckon that asking a random person in the street "do you have a читатель?" stands just as great a chance of being understood as "do you have a liseuse?" .

Agreed! I never cease to be amazed at that silly, petty things people will get into heat arguments over on the internet!

I'm amazed at the people who start the silly arguments for silly reasons. And wanting to use a silly word that has no meaning on what the silly word is wanting to be used for is silly.

Here is a list of all the words of Greek origin that from now on should not be used in this part of the form as a courtesy:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...sh_derivatives

And of French origin:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of..._French_origin

English and French of course mostly have both Latin origin, and let's not even go there.

What origin of modern English words has to do with a particular foreign word? Foreign word to English as of today.
Why not to use ספר? or читатель?
Who really cares that nobody understands it? One day it might be integrated into the vocabulary. Let's be rude to people who don't understand it and use it

Erm, these words were foreign too before they were integrated, obviously. And if you look closely, many of them are exactly the same, so they are not just the origin of an english word, but the same word.

Is using words that someone might not understand rude? There are english words that many english people don't understand, I'm sure. You can always ask, most people will be happy to explain when they realise they were not understood.

And let's face it, you are all just pretending that you don't understand what liseuse means. It's been explained over and over after all, in this specific thread too.

Containing the original story (in english), a french translation which was published in la Revue des Deux Mondes and which Twain finds to be a travesty of the original text, and Twain's re-translation of the french back into english, word for word (this is where things degenerate). A masterpiece of babelfishien nonsense dating from well before babelfish was even a gleam in the binary code of its creator (1903). Best appreciated if you can read both French and English, but even if you skip the french version it's truly brilliant. If you have ever translated random text using babelfish just because it's funny, don't miss this book.

As good old Samuel Clemens himself put it in his foreword "I cannot speak the French language, but I can translate very well, though not fast, I being self-educated."
also available in .imp format.
That story is available in plain text, HTML, epub, Mobi, and a couple of other formats for free on the Project Gutenberg website in a collection entitled Sketches New and Old by Mark Twain.

It includes the original story, the French translation, and the re-translation back to English by Twain.

EDIT: Crap! Yet again I jumped the gun before realizing you were linking to a MobileRead IMP upload you had posted, since the first link in your post was to the FeedBooks site! Oh, well.

Is feedbooks free?

That's not the issue here. If you look at the title of this thread, you'll see that it's asking about the word "liseuse" being used outside MR. I am quite serious in my comment that the word "liseuse" stands about as much chance as being understood by the average English speaker as the word "читатель" (the Russian word for "reader", in case you were wondering). I reckon that either word has a vanishingly small chance of being understood, unless one should happen upon a native French or Russian speaker and even then, "liseuse" has so many other meanings that it would probably not be understood to mean "a book reader". "читатель" at least has the benefit of unambiguously meaning "reader".

I wasn't wondering. I looked it up, it's not that difficult and I didn't think it was rude of you to drop a foreign word into the conversation

Words are assigned meaning by the people using them. When the name iPad became known, if you remember, it was the subject of much ridicule. Many people claimed it evoked anything but the image of a tablet device. Now, what, a few months later?, most of us have already forgotten our initial reactions to the word and use it naturally. It only took a little (ok, an awful lot of) marketing and a huge fanbase. Even without the corporate backing, I don't see why words that are unknown at one point in time cannot become popular later. It happens all the time.

I don't really care if 'liseuse' catches on or not, or who uses it. I'm just reacting to all the disproportionately negative reactions to it. It's just a word, nothing to get so upset about.

Thank you astra! I was wondering when someone would turn a simple discussion over people's personal preferences of names to call electronic reading devices into a flame war. You've answered my curiosity in spades!

Feedbooks also has the best looking ePubs and the most navigable site out of them all. Also, Hadrien, a moderator here, is a co-founder of the site. Double also, it's the only place I'll publish my stuff beause it allows you to set your own licensing or lack thereof.

Yes, it's definitely a thumbs up for Feedbooks
