Have iRex given you any indication of when you're likely to get your iLiad, Martin?

Thanks Tribble, that is more info than iRex gave me. Is the 14 Sept date confirmed do you know? Hate to get my hopes up. feel like the great complainer of this fine forum at the moment but gee guys, the money left my account almost 2 weeks ago.
No Harry, to your question. All my info is coming from this forum. I am really enjoying it here, just not contributing much at the moment. |

Waiting until the 14th
iRex confirmed they would ship Thursday from Europe. We're expecting our shipment to arrive on Tuesday or Wednesday. Customer orders are prepared waiting for iLiads and shipping labels.

I'm rather new here, so please forgive me for my likely unfounded speculation...
Is this stock shortage of the iLiad perhaps due to E-Ink screen production moving over to the new Vixplex screens. The newer screen that will be used in the new Cybook Gen 3 and presumably the minor update to the Sony Reader? It seems iLiad is the only one not to announce a new model. Perhaps they will just quietly sell the update screen under the original iLiad name with a quiet "Rev. B" stamped somewhere on the underside. Larger companies, such as Sony, always want to tout a minor modification as a major overhaul, perhaps iRex just isn't as slimy as that. |

No, the iLiad will not have Vizplex screen for some time. The large vizplex screens are not yet mass production ready. It will at least take till January for larger vizplex screens to appear. I do hope the iLiad will get one aswell eventually, but i must also point out, that the vizplex is not as big a step foreward as some people here believe.
It will be whiter and have slightly faster switch times, but the contrast ratio is lower than on the current screens. I cant wait to see a live comparison between the two screens though. |

How do you know the contrast ratio is lower? Would it not be higher given a whiter background?

You can measure contrast. It is relative. So while the screen is whiter, the black will not distinguish itself from the white as much as it did on the older displays. (it was stated on the eink homepage somwhere) But thats just numbers, i have no idea, wether the vizplex screens give you a subjective better reading experience. I will have to wait and see

Contrast is simply the difference in density between the white and the black. If the white is whiter and the black remains constant the contrast will be higher. If the white stays constant and the black gets darker that will of course also give more contrast. There are of course other issues involved in readability such as specular surface reflections, size of object you are attempting to distinguish and the resolution of the output. If the edges of a black image are sharp it makes reading easier than if they are fuzzy.
I have never sen an e ink display but am a commercial photographer and the issues must be the same though less complex with e readers than with photographic images. |

You also have to consider that the iLiad has a different screen than the other eReaders.
In addition to its larger size, it supports more grey scales (16 vs 4), and I would imagine that the Wacom screen changes the display characteristics as well. With the larger screen size and the increased grey scales, I am not sure the other changes would make the newer rev Readers that much of a wow factor over the older iLiads. |
