I don't know the name in English but we call it "huile de dormance". Translates to dormancy oil. Some insects breathe through their chitin (skin). Oils and soaps coat the skin thoroughly, choking them.

Dormancy oil is better when applied early spring time before insect eggs hatch.
Ants are also repelled by powdered glass spread across an area. The micro shards cut through the chitin that let's in bacteria. There is also BT. It's a bacteria that is harmful to most insects. You can buy it in traps. The trap contains food laced with bacteria. When the scout ants and workers bring some to the colony, all ants die. Cheap and effective...
