Suggestions regarding readers please

I was just about sold on the DR800 since I found a good deal on one but I'm wondering if it is even worth getting over an Iliad? There is also a redesigned Iliad pad on their site but given the chap 11 filing I'm wonder if I should even bother with any of their readers at this point. It's unfortunate as there is nothing else, to my knowledge, like dr800 on the market. I'm just concerned about future firmware updates or continued interest in community development.

Opinions?

Between the two, iLiad vs DR800, I would definitely recommend the DR800. The iLiad is their previous generation device, and there is not any new firmware coming out for it. It's also limited in that the only DRM format it supports is Mobipocket, which the industry is moving away from.

As far as whether or not it's a good investment to buy an iRex device with their current status, I'm not sure. You'll probably have to make up your own mind on that one. Companies have pulled out of Chapter 11 in the past, but others have gone under. I don't think we know yet what will happen.

if I can get it at a decent price and install the RC beta firm then I think I'll be fine for a while. Ultimately, I really a tablet device with an e-link like display. Such things don't exist yet and I'm not sure I want to read on an LCD screen for extended periods of time.

The sources of the firmware have only recently been released, I expect some more activity from the developers/porters coming weeks.

Device: Liseuse: Irex DR800. PRS 505 in the house, and the missus has an iPad.
If IREX wasn't in the financial situation it is I would unreservedly say go for it. But you have to consider the possibility that you may end up with a device without warranty support and without development (except for third-party development). Having bought the DR800 a few months ago I am very happy with it, but I wonder if I would buy one today, (of course, there might be a "fire-sale" as a result of IREX's situation - in which case I might well buy another!)

At the moment the DR800 is the best 8'' out there ( it is the only one out there, ignoring the DX, yuck ) and happens to be a very good unit.

There will be a whole slew of large readers released towards the end of the year with the Asus, boox, PocketBook being the first in line.

The way I look at it is if the device (whichever one you're looking at) has all of the features you need in it today and is worth the price, then buy it. If it needs firmware updates to get all of the features you need or to be worth the price, then don't buy it until it does (regardless of what company it is).

That way, whether or not the company goes under, changes their plans, cancels updates, etc... the device was still worth the price you paid. Additional updates/features would be nice, but if they don't happen (for whatever reason) you're not left regretting the decision to buy. This is a good rule of thumb for any product.

IMO, the bigger question is what happens to warranty support in the event that the worst happens and iRex goes under. That's probably the main thing I would consider right now when deciding whether or not to buy a DR800.

I'd make a slight change to that and say... There are a whole slew of large readers scheduled to be released. We've seen lots of examples of these that never made it to a final product that you can go out and order. It's important to keep that in mind.

The warranty thing does concern me a bit; but that is called a gamble. For under 300 bucks (so far) I think I'll get one as it really does seem like something I'd enjoy reading. If not, I can always sell it on ebay or to some one here if they really want.

$300? That's a really good price. I'm facing €500, and at the moment I'm holding back. Yes, there's no better device, no, I'm not willing to risk it.

Would you be able to share your source of $300 IREX DR800S?
