Yes if you don't have access to a windows PC. If not the way described above is on the same level as welding your car doors in the evening cause somebody told you about people robbing navigation systems

Are you saying that with Kindle firmware 2.5, Mobipocket 6 software reports a different PID for your Kindle than it did for firmware 2.3?

And if so, are you saying that this new PID works to remove DRM using MobiDeDRM?

You can get your PID using Mobi Reader 6 sure, so can I. But it's the same PID I've always had (originally obtained using kindlepid). It doesn't however work to deDRM books anymore. Instead the deDRM scripts give the message "Error: no key found. maybe the PID is incorrect." Maybe I'm not understanding what you mean?

Mobipocket v6.0 gives you the same PID that you've always had. The one that doesn't work anymore to decrypt a book. Thanks for the suggestion, though... every little bit helps.

No reason to panic, right? Just download the book to K4PC and fire up skindle. No problem... sounds great!

Here's the problem with that scenario -- and I'm really getting tired of explaining it -- I use Linux! The K4PC + skindle solution doesn't work on Linux (not even if you find the old beta version of K4PC and get it working under Wine, I've tried).

Unless I want to walk across the street, knock on the neighbor's door and ask nicely if I can install some software on their PC, I'm out of luck. So is anybody else who doesn't have a Windows PC or a Mac in their home.

So, as much as everyone would like to think there's a global solution to this problem that will work for everybody... there's not.

So I panic... with the comfort of knowing I have every right to.
You can always find a copy of Windows and dual install. You COULD find an illicit version, but even if that's not your cup of tea, an old XP disc would do fine for your purposes; those can be found dirt cheap these days. Granted, it's an inelegant solution since you'd probably want to reformat one of your computers (Windows doesn't play well with others when installed second), but if this is a big concern for you, it's probably worth it. Just cut your Windows partition down to what's required. Shouldn't be too terrible.

I’ve done a hexdump of an ebook delivered to the Kindle via Whispernet while still on version 2.3. Then I did a hexdump of the same ebook (delivered via Whispernet) after the upgrade to 2.5.2. I don’t know if this will help anyone working towards a solution, but I thought it would at least allow people who don’t have a Kindle to offer ideas. I uploaded this info to MediaShare if anyone wants to take a look. I also included a diff file that shows differences between old and new. http://www.mediafire.com/?2nmzjnjummi.

My skills are limited but I’m willing to share my feeble attempts at a solution.
This is not mine. But it may help some see what's what.

Another solution would be to install VirtualBox and then install Win XP as a guest or go for VMWare player with a XP image.

What i did was

1. Install an old Mobi Reader 6 version on my notebook at the office
2. Copy an amazon Book from KDX with 2.5 to the notebook
3. Get my PID kDX by mobi reader (don't know if it was the same then before the update)
4. Use the mobi script (have to check the exact version Nr of the script) via command line with the PID obtained in step 3

Result was a DRM free copy.

For those running Win7 you can download Windows VPC with a free copy of XP here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/vir.../download.aspx

Do with that what ya will...it's all free and it works great. Also it's a perfect way to traverse the Darknets since the environment is virtual and who cares what they do to it, just delete a corrupted VPC and keep copies of your already created clean VPC's as you create them for whatever OS you want to run in the VPC...it's an option to using VMWare (which is generally better but this is easier for most folks).

The important question here is whether you'd already downloaded the book to your Kindle before you upgraded to 2.5.

I suggest deleting the book from the Kindle, getting it downloaded again, and trying with that copy. I think you'll find your step 4 no longer works.

Windows isn't a workaround for everything

For those of you that might have forgotten, magazines and newspapers are tied to a device. If you read one on your Kindle, you cannot read it in Kindle for PC. (You can perhaps change the subscription to that device, but then you can't read it on the Kindle.) This is different than how they deal with books, which you can read on any device (up to the limit).

Don't be misled by the "download" button for newspapers and magazines; this will just give you a file for your *Kindle's* DRM, not the PC's.

Personally, I just want assurance that my purchase will be there for me long-term. I like to look back at old editions of magazines sometime, and I have no intention of doing anything illegal. It's frustrating how Amazon treats me as some sort of thief.

Now, perhaps you could change all your subscriptions to the PC, de-DRM them, and them copy them to the Kindle de-DRM'd... but that's a lot of hassle.

If you have a hack on it (like the font or screensaver hacks) it will download the upgrade, but it won't install or so I've read.

I believe if you install some hacks, so that the firmware is no longer standard firmware, the Kindle won't update. But this is hearsay.
