I tried to upgrade my DR1000S from the 1.7.1 firmware to the 2.0RC2 firmware. After the "updating firmware" screen, it seemed to attempt to reboot and I was greeted with 1) a blank screen 2) a green bottom middle LED and 3) a orange status LED.

I tried various forms of resets to no avail. I reverted the SD card to the old 1.7.1 firmware, nothing. *immediately* after turning on the device, I get the orange led and a blank screen and nothing else happens. It does not load the 1.7.1 firmware anymore, so I am effectively left with a brick.

I would appreciate your help in resolving this issue.
Could it have anything to do with the battery level? I know the iLiads used to not load new firmware if it detected the battery was too low. Maybe you've gotten stuck in a state where you can't go forward or back with the firmware because there's some error that it isn't displaying. I'd make sure the battery is fully charged, and then try putting the 1.7 firmware back on it again.

Yea, I'll try that and report back, good tip. Although I did have usb power plugged in while flashing.

Don't know about the DR series, but if I remember right, the iLiad wouldn't work even if the power was plugged in. The battery charge level had to be over a certain percentage (80%, or something like that?), regardless of whether or not it was plugged in at the time. Kind of weird, and confused a few people. Although it's trying to protect from the power going out halfway through an upgrade, which is probably a good thing to be cautious about.

There is a LED combination that means "battery too low to boot", but I don't think it's the one you're describing. Maybe there's a different LED error that is specifically for the battery too low for firmware install.

Hopefully this is what's happening, but it's kind of a long shot. Good luck.

With 50% battery level the update is no problem. And updating is possible with power-cord plugged in. I've done both.

OK, so battery level was an issue.* I charged for 24h and on powerup I now get a green status LED (together with a green bottom middle led).

Other than that nothing has changed, unfortunately: blank screen on bootup independend of whether or what SD card I insert.*Old 1.7 firmware, 2.0RC firmware, all the same. Just a blank screen. :-(

I still own a 650Euro brick.

I've had a similar problem. I got it back to work with using the reset-botten and using the sensor-buttons at the same time. After 6 or 7 trys it started again. Maybe it was luck...

But this was not during a firmware-update.

It is not clear for me from your message if you put the upgrade images on the SD-card or not. The firmware is installed in the internal flash, not on the SD-card, so changing SD-card only does not give you a different firmware. Did you try to put the firmware upgrade files on the SDcard and then press the reset button (small hole next to usb). As far as I know, after a reset the boot software first checks if there is an upgrade on the SD-card and installs it without starting the 'normal-firmware'. So if your firmware got corrupted this method should still work.

Good luck with getting it to run again.

Yes, I did put the firmware upgrades on the SD card and tried to reboot/reset. I also put in the original SD*card and tried to reboot/reset. iRex has responded to my trouble ticket and told me the know the reason and it can only be fixed at their "programming station" not via firmware upgrades. So I am now supposed to send in my irex to the Netherlands on my own expenses. Well, this is what I am likely to do.

When they will fix your DR, they should install the release version of the 2.0-firmware. ;-)

Anyone try the update-dr1000s-0629 version? Shows as RC3, I just checked the ftp and it's there. Looks like they have it for the 800 as well, i'll give it a whack.

http://updates.irexnet.com/beta/

http://i-to-i.irexnet.com/2010/06/30/

Improvements from v2.0-rc2

* Improved zooming (PDF, images):
o zoom above 400% possible
o auto zoom to best available factor, fix blank screens
o reduced memory required while scaling images, fix overruns
* Fix page flipping speed in reflowed documents (EPUB, PDF)
* Fix size and position of page and scribbles when switching back to original size (PDF)
* Fix unexpected failure while generating thumbnails
* Fix searching for single characters in text files

i have tested it , installed just fine , but the ftp was quite confusing , previsouly they had several files, but you could tell which one is the newest by their timestamp. now all of them show june 30th as their time of upload and they are differentiated just by few hours , i know they have version in their filename , but i wasnt sure which one is the newest , so i used 629. now it showed rc3 in about page .
i did not have time to check changes though

How is the contrast this time around (compared to the 1.x series)?

FYI, the number in the file name is the date of the release...

0401 = April 1st = first beta
0408 = April 8th = second beta
0603 = June 3rd = RC1
0609 = June 9th = RC2
0629 = June 29th = RC3

Well, what can I say. I sent in my DRS1000 end of June and haven't heard back since then from irex. So much for that.
