Hacks Turn off your wireless-2.5 doesn't work with mobidedrm!

Updated via usb to 2.5.2. Whispernet not turned on before or after.

Categories work just fine and all books are still there. Not going to worry about DRM for now. Everything purchased before have been dedrm'd and I have no intention on purchasing any further from Amazon until a hack is available. More than enough books available to me to keep me reading for a couple of years..

Since your Kindle hasn't communicated with AZ since the update, nothing has changed at their end (re your update) and you should be able to purchase based on the previous DRM scheme. (One would think)

Ok, here is what I found. After manually updating my K2 to 2.5.2, leaving Wireless off, and not contacting Amazon via Wireless, here is what I came up with. All files were transferred via USB:

I pulled an old azw book from my hard drive and then downloaded the same book from my account on Amazon. Both files worked on the K2 and Mobidedrm worked on both files.

I did the soft-reset (20sec hold) and my collections stayed where they were. They did not disappear.

I turned on Wireless, got 2 bars and then selected ‘Sync & Check for Items’. After synching with nothing new found, I waited appx. 15min. I then went to my account on Amazon and downloaded the same book as before. This time, Mobidedrm would not work on it. All three copies of the book still worked fine on my K2.

Conclusion: Once you update and contact Amazon via Wireless, your books will automatically be re-DRM’d with the new 2.5.2 scheme. All previous books you have downloaded that still have DRM will still work. The 2.5.2 update will work with all your DRM’d books even though Mobidedrm won’t work with the post 2.5.2 versions. Collections are stable and don’t disappear with a soft-reset. Even if you don’t connect with Amazon via Wireless, the Collections will work and are stable. I even deleted everything off of my K2 and then did a restore. The Collections were restored along with all my books.

Seems the only thing being lost with the 2.5.2 update is the Mobidedrm capability, and that can gotten around with the Kindle4PC solution.

And I'll add.. Updated without Whispernet. Purchased new book, but downloaded to my computer for USB transfer. File successfully deDRM'd. If your willing to not go to Whispernet, your PID will still work with new files.

Yeah, I forgot to mention that part. I also downloaded a new book before turning on the Wireless and Mobidedrm still worked on it. Once Wireless was used to check in with Amazon after the 2.5.2 update Mobidedrm got stopped cold.

Which i posted in the second post on this panic thread

They just changed the way the PID works now so that the simple Plugin for calibre doesn't work anymore. Thats all.

There is no panic needed that books won't work anymore or that new books will not be able to be stripped of their DRM protection or that these new stripped of books won't work anymore. Or whatever.

The skindle script works like a charm and the unswindle script which is as comfortable as using a calibre plugin in my eyes also works without any problem. If you have a PC and use an old Kindle4PC tool that is the best way to go.

Turning off whispernet (maybe the best festure of a kindle btw) sounds to me like a pointless and panic driven idea caused by lack of understanding what really changed

Yeah, especially since I'm really loving this "post quote to Facebook" feature. Although it's apparently not available in Germany (according to Amazon's website). So random. Anyone know why this is?

No reason to panic, right? Just download the book to K4PC and fire up skindle. No problem... sounds great!

Here's the problem with that scenario -- and I'm really getting tired of explaining it -- I use Linux! The K4PC + skindle solution doesn't work on Linux (not even if you find the old beta version of K4PC and get it working under Wine, I've tried).

Unless I want to walk across the street, knock on the neighbor's door and ask nicely if I can install some software on their PC, I'm out of luck. So is anybody else who doesn't have a Windows PC or a Mac in their home.

So, as much as everyone would like to think there's a global solution to this problem that will work for everybody... there's not.

So I panic... with the comfort of knowing I have every right to.

Actually, so is everyone else without a Window PC. The algorithm for generating the book specific PID used by Kindle for Macintosh hasn't been reverse engineered.

I'm still holding off. Not in a panic - I just assume that eventually Amazon will force a K4PC update on everybody by refusing to download new purchases to the old version software. I imagine that they will keep the old PID Kindle method active for a long time, as there are still numerous original Kindles functioning.

So at this point I'm really rooting for those really smart techy men and women who get those python scripts working to do their magic.

Heck, I've waited this long for collections - I can wait a bit more.

As I understand it from the different posts here you can still get the update you just have to stay of the Amazon whispernet. In other words don't turn on wireless.

It's not that I doubt you, but I'd like a little proof that someone has tried it. You say you haven't done the update yet, so how can you be sure?

EDIT: and if you're an "insider", how about a few discrete "tips" (on the proper forums of course) to get us going?

That's exactly how it worked for me. And I have done the update, on one of my family's Kindle's. She's not interested in DRM, and I'm not interested in her books, but everything in your first paragraph is exactly how it worked for me on her (now running 2.5.2) K2US.

Sorry but i understand what changed and you don't seem to 100% like a lot of people in this thread.

Amazon didn't change the DRM sceme from what i know they changed the way of the PID used to DRM the books downloaded. Do if you run your calibre Plugin or the old mobi script it won't work-

If you don't have the possibility to get access to a windows pc (which i don't really understand but i think this really could happen to some people of course) you can always try to get your PID by using Mobipocket in version 6.0 and i think that should work out under Wine by what i know and run the mobi script with this new PID.

At least i can get my PID on my KDX with 2.5 running on it by using the old Mobipocket 6.0 software.

So take a deep breathe, don't panic and try to find a working way

But from what they changed i would guess it won't take to long until somebody finds a way to go around this problem in a "comfortable" way like before.
