It is not likely that Amazon or Adobe is going to abruptly go out of business any time soon.
Not to sidetrack the discussion, but as we've seen on the music side, the problem with server based DRM systems is, the companies in charge don't even have to go abruptly out of business at all. Microsoft and Yahoo both decided to stop supporting their subscription music services, and shut down their servers. In Microsoft's case, they weren't even getting out of the music business-they just had a different model they wanted to sell, with an incompatible DRM system (Zune Pass).

And Wal-mart WMA's. Many years ago I bought a few from them. I quickly figured out I didn't want to buy anything with DRM and got the same albums in MP3 format, of course with no DRM. Sure enough, a few years later Wal-mart decided to get out of the WMA biz, and shut the servers down..... Never again........

Any company can and will change their business. It's progress, and it will happen. I would bet a steak dinner that in 20 years (2030) there will be no Kindle. Amazon (if it's still called that) will have been bought and sold a few times, and all of this a distant memory.....

As I said before, bottom line .... learn to strip DRM. Without the DRM it really does not matter where you bought the book from, because it will then be YOUR book.

I haven't learned how to remove DRM yet. I'm on an apple computer and most instructions I find are for PC. For now I download all my Kindle book purchases to my computer and save the .mobi file on my hard drive. I figure eventually I can remove the DRM if I ever need to remove it.

Good idea, at least have back ups of the files on an external drive. You cannot count on a company always being there and hosting your purchases. On that subject....

I keep backups on all my photos, music, books and important documents on a portable hard drive that I keep in a safety deposit box. Every 3 months I get it and update it. That way even if the house burns down, I still have my priceless (to me) photos..... And my very hard to replace music, books....etc....

If you have a Mac with an Intel chip, you may want to consider something like VMWare Fusion or perhaps even Sun's (free) Virtual Box. Either would allow you to install Windows 7. There are a couple of very simple applications for stripping DRM from Amazon's .azw format which run on Windows.

Still, I guess that is a lot just for that - it helps if you actually need to / want to run Windows on your Mac. I need it for work, so I take advantage of the good stuff that comes along with it.

I've had a mac ever since they were little boxes with 9" black and white screens with like 20 Mb hard drives.

I do have an Intel based imac but, I just can't get over installing windows on a mac. I'll just store up my downloaded ebooks on my mac eventually someone will come up with a friendly GUI DRM removal piece of SW for a mac.

Ah, no. Amazon encrypts files with a unique id derived from the specific device it was downloaded on. If you own 2 different iPads, both of which sync to the exact same Kindle account, they will have 2 different keys.

Without knowing which device the file is from, you can't liberate the data. That means saving the files does you no good. (Sorry.) If you want to de-DRM, do it now.

They all get downloaded via whispernet to the Kindle2. From there they get tranferred via usb port to the computer for saving on the computer. I do also download to my ipad, but all books are downloaded via only one device (kindle2) for computer storage. I don't have to keep track of which books came from which device because the computer stored books came from only one device.
