Tom, you were totally justified in creating a contest. It was very entertaining and lots of fun. Isn't it a purpose of existence for MR?
The person benefiting from that karma was rewarded for performing a task...a beautiful one at that. The idea of letting others put in image what they see in you is just delightful.
I hope your post was meant as a cynical joke only...that's how I perceived it.

I hand out every drop of my karma everyday for the heck of it. I just dont see it as this noble or holy thing. I hand it out to let people know that I am enjoying the interaction and conversation even if what they said was not particularly funny or witty. I will keep handing it out this way until told otherwise. I didnt know that there was a guideline behind giving it away.

I think it is silly if people put that much weight on the stupid thing called karma. Human nature makes people give it importance it does not deserve.

Before, this thread would take an entire week before anyone posted on it...maybe we need to define what a milestone is.

Better yet, lets define who the milestones are for. I post 100 times a day. Not spam mind you, but I take part in all of the conversations because my life is sad and I have no where else to be. I dont think I deserve a congrats post once every few days. On top of that, if you post 100 times a day you tend to get karma quicker...more one-liners and jokes to toss at people. I dont think I should get praised for that either.

A few of the people on this site actually took a year to get to 1k posts. They have a milestone. So I really do think we should make a list of who the milestones should be for.

Or maybe, the people could just decide for themselves. I was really proud with my 50th (yes, 50th) post, because it was a real milestone for me back then. Just as I am proud of my 500+ posts now.

That's what I am saying.

If it is a milestone or not depends on who it is and nothing else.

edit:

My post was aimed at people stating that too many of us are congratulating too many people on the milestone thread along with giving away too much karma. I was simply asking the people who are stating such to explain the karma / Milestone thread guidelines.

Bah. Now I have to respond. My arguments are probably full of holes, but here goes...

As far as I know, there are no guidelines about giving out karma h_t. It's your choice to hand out as much as you want, to anyone you want and as often as you can.
There just seems to be a glut of karma on the board lately, let's call it karma inflation. The more that's put out, the less it's value. But then again, if it had no value to start with, how can it be devalued? Maybe a bad analogy.
Maybe it's just the growth in membership on this forum. Maybe it's outgrown karma. I dunno.
Maybe were going through a baby boom on the forum and old traditionalist like me can't handle the quantity of milestone posts, and it's time I was put in the old forum home.
Quote:

Karma is just a little show of appreciation from other members, a thank you for helping or because someone made you laugh or just because you can. It is probably of no importance to a lot of members. Although there are some exceptions, it didn't used to be something that was bragged about or celebrated, it was just appreciated. If you feel there should be karma milestones celebrated in this thread it is your option to do so. If I find that this thread is excessive in it's karma celebrations, it's my option to ignore it. I tried to say something about how excessive I thought the karma celebrations were in this thread before making any decision to ignore it. I guess I didn't get my point across very well.
Quote:

That's what I really liked about this thread. When it popped up now and again I knew someone was celebrating a milestone. Threads don't have to be hoppin' all the time to be popular. It's also the top sticky in the lounge; very easy to find if you want to post a milestone, whatever you decide a milestone should be.

You can't get karma without posting, and you do a lot of that, so I expect your karma to be high. We'll just have to disagree on whether karma milestones should be posted on this thread. Maybe my life if even sadder than yours, and I'm just trying to hang on to some traditions that don't really exist.

In my opinion, I don't think karma milestones belong on the list.

Maybe I'll ask the karma fairy to reset my karma to zero.

There's a lot of maybes in there, but that's all from me on this subject.

Wetdogeared, I'm mostly with you. If we consider the Karma as a "big kiss on the cheek with red lipstick", I guess it's useless to tell the people "Hey, look at my cheeks! I have MANY kisses!". At least it doesn't feel right to me.
What I also see is, that people don't actually brag about their Karma. It's always other users, who congratulate them. And with more and more people having 1-2-3-7-10k posts Karma tends to grow really fast So we have a bit of a very good intentional flood.

I would lie to propose something radical. Only the milestone "owners" should post here, as first post. I mean:

LCF: I have 500 posts!
Member X: congrats!
Member Y: yeah, well done.
...
LCF: thanks

and not

Member X: hey, LCF has 500 posts.
Member Y: congrats!
...
LCF: thanks

I see some flaws in this idea, so here are a few additional suggestions:

You can congratulate X if X has already posted somewhere, that he's achieved a milestone (like me in the "what are you doing RIGHT NOW" thread.

Or, when X hasn't posted, but you know him/her (as) well (as you can know someone on a forum) and you know he/she has achieved a milestone for him/herself. (like building a new house, or having a kid, something worthy for this person).

I think that's all. Going back to being part of pohhbear_nc's assimilated.... things.

Good thinking my friend!

They did something like that at the beginning of this thread. Not all of them and not always. I like it. It is fresh and spontaneous.

I do not think that it should, could even be put in rules. But is a style that will be imitated and hopefully it will become established. It will take an occasion of posting out of the target of the post hunters, and it will take the posting on this thread down, a little, much. We'll see.

Then it will also take away the pleasure to surprise a friend! The famous and never enough appreciated surprise party!.

Make a poll, in this thread. When it has reached a certain number of votes, you close it.

Ciao

At present karma has become so devalued that, for the most part, it is meaningless as any sort of indication of how people feel about you or your postings. When I first started posting here I would give arguments and postings by people with more karma more weight than those by people with less karma. Now that I've been here a while I no longer do that. However, that is not to say that karma has no value, if there person giving it is doing so because they appreciate something someone said or found something funny then they are assigning their own value to it. It is the same for the recipient, if they think that there is value in the K they received then there is.

Sort of the same thing goes for posting as well.

With all being said though I see no reason to change the format of this thread.

If we tell people they need to post their own I'm sure we'll see a lot less of them posted.
If we set specific values on milestones then we'll miss it when person X makes their 150th post, or 200th, or 400th or whatever value is not a milestone. I say keep things as they are, but people have to understand that not every milestone can or will get a personal congrats from everyone.

Just my $0.02
