"The XO-3 will be an 8.5 x 11 inch tablet with a Pixel Qi touchscreen. It will be about half as thick as an iPhone and use OLPC’s Linux-based Sugar operating system. OLPC has set a target price of $75." The whole 8.5X11 device is $75, so the Pixel Qi screen should be very very cheap. Hope it delivers. |

The fact that the "target price" is $75 doesn't mean that they'll achieve that target. The target price for the original OLPC was $100, but I don't believe that the price has ever actually fallen below about $180.

With OLPC though doesn't it sell at an inflated price (180) for western markets, whereas in its intended markets the units are around 100 each. I presume it would be the same with this.

I think you also had to buy two together. I admit I got excited when I saw the prospect. I really wish they can deliver it by 2012. In reality, it is probably a pipe dream.

For Western markets they double the price - it's a "buy one, contribute one", deal. I believe that the actual price to the target market is still around the $180 mark. Or at least, that was the case, the last I heard.

It's still over $200 as of April 2010, according to wikipedia. The "buy one, contribute one" deal costs $399 (plus $25 shipping).

So was the XO-2, but that project was completely scrapped. Note, they said the XO-3 won't be available until 2012. This is just PR for now. As for the "target price"... well... that's already been covered in this thread.

Getting back to the subject title, The Pixel Qi screen should be not much, if any, more expensive than a regular LCD screen, at least according to what Ms. Jepsen has been saying in most of her videos. She claims that since the Pixel Qi can be made in the same fab as an LCD, using the same basic materials and mfg. tech., there should be very, very little price premium.
That makes the reported price premium for the Pixel Qi screened Adam, for example, very unwelcome. Either Mary Lou is wrong or the OEM's plan on making extra money as long as they can just because of the "wow" factor. |

Maybe the difference is an individual donating one vs a country (theoretically) ordering them in bulk?

Well, what can I say. Vaporware doesn't cost anything at all, does it?
