Have you considered moving the Paris apero to Paris Texas? Less likely to run into old friends there!

I can sympathise with that - although it's current co-workers for me. Most of the 200 odd people in head office know me by name and by sight (one of the joys of working in IT support ). Unfortunately, I don't always remember who they are, especially outside the office. I've had some fairly long conversations with people in the supermarket before now. When they're done, the yeti will ask me who I was talking to, to which I can only shrug and say "someone from work, I think"

Only slightly related, my mum was once on the phone for about 15 minutes with someone before either of them worked out it was a wrong number. They both had elderly relatives called things like Ethel and Doris, which weren't uncommon names in my nanna's generation!

I think we're invisible.
*Yes, we are.*
This is what happened to our self esteem. Remember our self esteem?
*Yes, I do. Charming fellow. Very thoughtful. Whatever happened to him?*
Hung himself in the closet. No one noticed until he started leaking into the apartment below.....

Zelda, cheer up! People change. The girl/woman you knew 15 years ago must not necessarily be the same woman now. Chances are, she has changed. So think positive, and don't count on 15 y. old info!
It just occurred to me, perhaps you have changed now. This time, you won't be annoyed (if I got it correctly) by her, you might just jell at her, so that she never calls you again. And runs away if she accidentally sees you on public places.

Murphy can't be right all the time - it's against Murphy's laws!

Edit: now going to sleep!

Actually that's the perfect answer for a lady. Wrong phone, wrong address. If it's a needful contact (business, ect.), just say, "Sorry, I've recently moved, here;s my new phone/address and write the correct one on the back...)

i once had a conversation the entire length of a métro ride home with a woman who clearly knew me and i could not for the life of me place her. i kept asking her leading questions hoping she'd give away some clue to her identity like "and how's work then ?" and she'd just answer things like "oh fine, i mean you know how it is" and i'd nod my head sympathetically as if i really *did* know how it was. (i did figure out who it was eventually. but not until several days later. it was just a question of context. she was a shopkeeper in my neighborhood, and seeing her outside of her usual context i drew a complete blank).

i'll hope you're right, but honestly, the reason i started to remember the details from before is because in the short conversation we had tonight she made *exactly* the same impression on me... i don't know if we change that much after a certain age, especially if we don't necessarily want to. but yes, let's be positive ! you never know.

I am going to say this once.
Instincts, Ladies and Gentlemen!

If it feels wrong to you, no matter how silly the thought, polite can go out the window! There is a reason.
Read "The Gift of Fear" for Pete's sake!
I gave out 30 copies of that book to people I care about.
My sister thinks every smiling stranger is a long lost friend. Do you know what kind of toll that takes on people who care about her?
I care about you people. Protect yourselves. Sure this was a minor incident. Harmless. But next time?

I have a very charming customer whom I think is English (remember, I'm in Illinois, USA) who comes in for Weetabix. Evidently we're the only store in a however many mile radius that carries it here. We were out for a while, though, and she was extremely unhappy!
