![]() Actually skindle is probably the better of the tools out there since it also handles topaz books. So it doesn't bother me so much that the update breaks DeDRM. =X= |

Kindle4PC works just fine for me. I don't see me updating or getting rid of that anytime soon.

On a risk-adjusted basis, I am obsessive-compulsive (alphabitize my spices, and no, cajun pepper goes under p, not c and not r) and have spent HOURS getting my library just like I want it on Calibre. Last weekend I moved all my books in my library (1200) to my kindle, to see if it would hold them. It did. That was in preparation for 2.5.2. I deleted them, intending to move books into categories one by one. I have figured out my categories, limited them to what will fit on one page. So, I really, really want the upgrade. But books are sacred to me. I was okay going to electronic books because of the space savings (the basement is full of boxes of read books) if I could keep them forever. Or at least until I read them. But now, I cannot be sure I will be able to read the books I buy. And I am really cheap, and don't want to have to buy them twice. Since once I install the update, I cannot go back, and I buy approximately a book a week, it is really important. So the risk of there not being a fix is low, but the consequence is devastating. Enjoy 2.5.2 everyone - I will wait. |

But don't topaz books require multiple steps? I guess besides being melodramatic, I am lazy.

Yes I hear you I'm lazy too and try to stay away from hard to shift books. But my experience is, if books in topaz format do not exist as eBook or only exists as a PDF. And these books are a must for me, as they have a wealth of knowledge.
Yes, it's equivalent to converting an eReader format. Where the text is extracted out to text. That is not to worst part, the OCR is terrible and there are many errors in the text output. Definitely not worth it if you can get the book in a friendlier format, but most Topaz books only exist in Topaz format and the skindle gives one access to those books. =X= |

I have the 2.5.2 for Kindle 2i and using the tool mentioned above with Kindle4PC latest edition still works fine allowing me to create a non DRM backup copy of my Kindle purchases that Calibre recognises.

Oh, I am tempted! Maybe after the Hawks play, I will reinstall Kindle4PC and see if I can get it working. Just bought 2 more books today - wouldn't have done so if I couldn't free them.

Thanks, Zorz, but the PID is what changes with 2.5. The books are either not encrypted using the PID, or some combination of PID and book title. If you don't upgrade to 2.5, it still does work. I can attest to that.

As a test I just tried MobiDeDRM on an .azw book I bought after updating to 2.5.2, and indeed the script no longer works, with a "no key found, maybe the PID is incorrect" error. This was a book downloaded via computer for USB transfer to the Kindle in question.
I expected as much, but it's good to check these things out for oneself. Now I can't say I won't buy any books until this gets sorted out, but I'll certainly be buying fewer books. Especially with the prices going up at basically the same time. I have total confidence that this is a temporary situation, but in the meantime that's an unknown number of snap purchases I won't be making. The sooner the smart script people get their hands on 2.5.x and update the tools, the better it'll be for Amazon's and the publishers' bottom lines. ![]() |

For everybody who wants to use the old unswindle script without using command line etc. i have uploaded the old KindleForPC Setup to rapidshare.
