Lol, I totally remember those things. They were pretty good at the time (actually all we had besides Apple IIe's), they're what I cut my teeth on when I first started to learn programming. I remember it took several hundred lines of code just to draw a skull and make its eyes flash!

![]() I think the first PC I actually owned was a Tandy 1000RL, didn't have a HDD but I think I was lucky enough to have a 1200 baud modem! I later sold it to a friend before I went overseas the first time and he ended up buying a 40MB HDD for it that cost him a whopping $450. (to think, now you can score a 500GB HDD for $99 )Thanks for the memories! |

I had a TRS-80 Model III. I really enjoyed it and got defensive when my Apple snob friends called it a "Trash-80". I was addicted to the "Stone of Sisyphus" adventure.

Bard's Tale was what did it for me. We played it on the Apple ][c/e (depending on what house we were at). Dad wouldn't let us touch his Trash-80 (

Asus EEE 701 to launch in September!

It appears that Asus may have made a press release on the EEE 701 ultraportable laptop. Several sources have basically the same text. Now they are saying the device will cost $199, and the models with more features will cost between $250 and $299. That's not too hard to take.

And the good news? The prediction is that it will be available next month. They are predicting small production runs due to component scarcity.

Yup, latest reliable info is that the original spec is now going to be $388 U.S. with two lower end models for less. That's no doubt due to a shortage of flash chips from chinese manufacturing resulting from fires at a couple plants. That, and our friends at apple buying up all the stock inventory on the shelves for their own hoarding needs has made the price of flash chips go through the roof. There's even a respectable vendor with pricing and specs posted now which seems to confirm these expectactions. Like anything though, if it sells well, they'll optimize development of it to take advantage of the market base and the price will get lower, especially once flash component pricing stabilizes.

When news about the EEE first surfaced I saw a lot of responses in the vein of: "for that price I'll buy two, just in case the first one breaks down". The 200 USD price is well below the sweet spot, it would appear. I am not surprised: I am guessing the EEE will have to compete in the market for the Psion Netbook and the Palm Foleo, devices considerably more expensive.

The problem right now with the EEE is the specs and price are not lock in concert!

The 199 could be or not coming to the US and memory may be cut in half or a quarter... and the price may go up to the price of a bargan basement Laptop. Looks like a wait and see right now.. |

There is a review here from unicap, who have an engineering sample machine. They have a 4GB version, and it only has 1.3 GB available to the user. So Asus will have to slim down the O/S even more to get it on a 2 GB device.
