It made me crack up when the Apple iPhone 4 video gloriously announces, that they bring VIDEOCALLS to the world!
Uhm, we've had this for years, here in Austria, ever since the third generation of cellular technology was launched.

That aside, the iPhone 4 looks like a really sweet phone. Looks "grown up"

Plus, your videocalling is thru a cellular network? Facetime is only wi-fi for now. I'm pretty sure AT&T's network couldn't handle the extra strain of 960x640 video streaming two ways

That would be an impressive screen if they did.

DO-WANT.

Actually, I'm still waiting for a multitouch iMac or MacBook Pro to come out. Or at the very least, an "App Store" for OSX.

I didn't upgrade to the 3GS as it didn't seem to be 'all that'. This new screen, though, has me lusting. I won't buy one in the near term -- but I WANT to

It'll be nice to have sync between iphone/iPad with the new iBooks. I enjoy that now, but only for my kindle books.

Yes, it's over the 3G network. Definately not HD, but I couldn't say what resolution you get. I've had at least 3 phones that were video-call enabled and never used it. Maybe the iPhone 4 will be a first?

My current iPhone is a 2g that I have had for almost 3 years and it's still going great, never seen any reason to upgrade, till now....

I do hope iChat and cameras, etc. make it into the iPod Touch this time around...but even if it just the screen/cpu/OS upgrade, it will be great.

I'll probably never be able to justify getting a iPhone or any kind of smartphone (I make maybe 10 calls a month on my prepaid mobile phone) but something that did everything but telephony and didn't require a wireless contract would be very attractive to me. I would stop thinking about getting an iPad, and give my Kindle to my wife...

Of course when the next iPad comes out I might have to get one anyway... <g>

I could see then going to 1280x1024 or 1600x1200 next iteration

as long as they do it in the same form factor, i'm game. if it's as big and unwieldy as the joojoo, forget it. personally, i find the ipad size to be perfect (for me). anything larger would be more difficult to hold, especially one-handed, unless they get the weight down. they could reduce the bezel by half and still maybe it somewhat accidental-tap-proof (although my thumbs do get in the way now and then with it as large as it is). but i am one who does not believe i need a 16:9 beast in my lap.

I remember having a "WTF" moment when they first showed the iPad dimensions..but now that I've been using it, I totally understand why they went with the proportions they did. I hope they up the pixel count without changing the overall dimensions too much.

Another interesting tidbit about the new screen, via Daring Fireball:
http://daringfireball.net/2010/06/iphone_4

Quote:
It’s mentioned briefly in Apple’s promotional video about the design of the iPhone 4, but they’re using a new production process that effectively fuses the LCD and touchscreen — there is no longer any air between the two. One result of this is that the iPhone 4 should be impervious to this dust-under-the-glass issue. More importantly, though, is that it looks better. The effect is that the pixels appear to be painted on the surface of the phone; instead of looking at pixels under glass, it like looking at pixels on glass. Combined with the incredibly high pixel density, the overall effect is like “live print”.

It also improved the field of view for the display — you can view the display from an oblique angle and it looks great. Again, like print. It’s like a glossy magazine come to life.

There were lots of reasons video-calls on mobile phones never really took off here in the UK, amongst them crappy quality cameras and the iffy reliability of the networks, but the real killer blow was the stupidly high charges levied by the carriers; at least you won't have that issue over WiFi. Also, lots of people are more used to to idea of video calls now, thanks to software like Skype.

+1. I wonder if they might make an iPad Mini (6") with that screen technology - smaller device but higher res screen, lighter weight but with good battery life etc... Might be interesting - pretty sure my wife would buy one...

Cheers, Pete

I find that too - anything larger would defeat it's purpose, and the proportions are great for the written page.
