So, just to summarise, we are all agreed that people should be able to fly flags and other sign of affiliation, regardless of what that flag or sign is, anywhere they want, except in those circumstances when they shouldn't be allowed to.
It is nice when we reach a consensus. ![]() |

If it's company policy it's company policy. I don't see the issue, aside from that it's only a flag. All imagery of this type - be it religious, flags, your favourite band, political opinion etc is a personal thing, and waving it about is just an attempt to show it off to other people.
I just can't see how it really matters much. |

To some Americans Halk, it matters a lot. I can't really explain it to you right now, but when I've had more sleep (and maybe more tea) I'll give it a go.

Yep, National Pride and individual rights, freedom of speech, freedom of expression, etc. etc. To many these are sacrosanct. |

In my opinion, a patriotic American cherishes those as well as many other of America's ideals, such as equality before the law. Patriots don't close their eyes to the failures of their country to always live up to it's ideals, nor do they agree with every action done in their name, but with a firm grasp of history and a knowledge their country's honorable successes as well as its tragic failures, work to create "a more perfect union." Those who would criticize everyone who seeks to improve what in their eyes is already perfect aren't patriots. They're religious zealots whose god is Uncle Sam. Striving for the betterment of the country is not unAmerican, and should never be so labeled. It is the very essence of patriotism. |

I think that pretty much does summarise what's seen as the ideals of America, if you like, the "good bits". And I certainly understand Americans having a sense of pride in that.
But the flag waving to me doesn't seem to be that at all, it seems to be as WT Sharpe put it, zealots. |

It's not just some Americans who feel like that. The whole my country right or wrong thing is not limited to one country. If the Union Jack and the St George Cross hadn't been co-opted by fascists and football fans otherwise more English people would display them, f'r example
