Cool kindle vs. calibre sorting

1. i only put .mobi and .pdf files on my kindle 2
2. i use mobidedrm on amazon purchased books
3. since amazon-purchased topaz files cannot be decrypted and converted they go on the kindle as purchased.
4. i reported to kovid, as a bug, a situation the was not a bug
5. the problem was that the kindle sorted, in author mode, differently than the kindle 2.
6. kovid helped me solve my problem.

thanks kovid!!

so the only problem that still exists is that the two topaz books that i own still don't sort on the kindle as they do in calibre. they sort by the author's first name even though i set the author sort to "last"name, first name"

any suggestions for a fix.

thanks for for authoring and maintaing calibre, kovid.

Topaz files can now be decrypted and converted. Because the text in the is OCRed, they usually need a bit of fixing up in the XHTML output.

You should be able to find out how on a certain shadowy gentleman's blog, or on the one run by his 'apprentice', Alf.

thanks! i didn't find (from the info at "a certain shadowy gentleman's blog") actually how to decrypt my two topaz ebooks, probably because i'm not really sure what the participants were saying. oh well!! but anyway kovid has fixed the topaz metadata problem that i was originally making mention of in his most recent (0.6.45) release!!!

thank you kovid goyal!!!

question regarding conversion of large files to mobipocket

Hi,
I'm new to the forum and I don't have a dedicated ereader; I have a Palm Lifedrive running (among other softreaders) mobipocket. I recently bought a netbook running windows 7 and I thought I'd use the pc version of mobipocket as a reader on it. That works well, and I thought to bring my whole library of ebooks into it. Here I ran into a problem, with the Palmreader format documents, which mobipocket won't read. I was looking for a solution when I found calibre, and it seemed to be the answer to my problem. But I'm running into a snag with a large file (7MB pdb) - it seems to take forever to convert. It sat at 1% for almost half an hour before I gave up. I tried both EPUB and MOBI formats, with the same result. This is the CIA world factbook for 2009. I also find that calibre can't seem to open this book, it just sits there loading...
I suppose I could also install ereader, but was hoping calibre could do the job. I've only just found it but I like how configurable it is, and would like to use it.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

First of all, I want to thank Kovid for creating calibre, it makes converting ebook so much easier. One small problem that I have is all my mobi files which shows beautifully in PC with their image cover, got separated in picture folder in jetbook ereader. I guess the image cover is not embedded in mobi files. What should I do? Does anyone have the same problem? TY in advance.

I'm using an old Clie TH55, Palm OS5, and a Mac.
Hope I'm in the right thread here. I can solve _most_ of my conversion problems with TextSoap and then use PorDiBle to convert to Palm-readable files (MobiReader reads them fine and I use it mostly; SmartDoc also works with them fine).

One consistent problem: this character: ó
It should become a hyphen, generally. It doesn't convert with anything I have except Appleworks, which will fix it.

A wish -- to pull up a column of all the non-ASCII characters found in a file, and a blank next to them, into which I could type what should replace each one. Let me save that as a default so I could use it for batches.

I used to have an application that did that in DOS 3.3. Never seen anything like it since.

Hi...I'm new to the forums. I want to thank kovidgoyal for Calibre. It's made life much easier.

I have a .chm file that I converted to epub without a problem with the prior version of Calibre. I upgraded to the most recent release, and then attempted to convert the same .chm file to mobi and got an error...it was unable to convert.

Was there a change?
How do I troubleshoot?
